Default Clutch spring replacement

Was a long thread on this recently, but I'll add my 2 cents: definitely works! That jerk that you get if you don't mesh the gas with the clutch engagement is much minimized. It feels easier in all gears to shift smoothly at lower speeds--the engagement point seems shorter, if you can follow the logic, so the extra travel doesn't cause the jerk. Easy to install--take the old one off and put the side pins in with the pedal up, then push it down to pull the curved part over the capture on the back of the pedal. For 7 bucks, it is a great mod! Thanx to the guys who did the research on it!

Yeah, I just did it myself. Definetly improves the action.
Worth every penny.

Did you use the C6 or C5 spring?

Mine broke a couple of months after I got the car in Aug '05, so I guess it's time to replace it, huh?

The C5 spring is much smaller. Makes you wonder why GM changed it in the first place. Several people have said theirs has broken; haven't heard anyone say that about the C5. Not really sure why it's better, but it is, so for $7, what's to lose?

A lot of drivers must be trying this C5 replacement. Gene Culley is out of C5 springs, and his suppliers are also sold out. Gene tells me he should be able to fill my order in 4 or 5 days.

My 03 Z06 spring broke almost a year ago. I saw the invoice; wholesale cost of the spring was $4; I was charged $8 and they billed 1 hour to the extended warranty company. The removal of part of the spring and the install of the new spring took less than 5 minutes. What a deal.

Is there a link to how to do this with picutres?

Do a search and find the big thread. Take a look at it and you'll see it's a piece of cake. Pry the end out of the bracket on one side, pull the part that hooks into the captured bracket on the back of the pedal lever and pull the spring off--pedal up. Then insert both ends of the new spring--still up, with the part that hooks onto the captured bracket on the bottom. Push the pedal in and pull that part onto the capture. Takes about 2 minutes--fitting in under the dash is the hardest part. One other tip--have good light down there.

Here's the C6 spring on the left and the C5 spring on the right.

Just to make sure I understand. Is it just the replacement of the C6 spring with the C5 spring? Nothing special no mods and no different ways of putting it in, right?

That's all, and it only goes in one way ( that I could see).
Hardest part is getting under the dash.

i removed my clutch spring today--07 coupe--and the feel is entirely different. the spring evidently assists the driver by lowering the pressure needed to push down the pedal. without it it feels more like the vettes of old. nice change. it took me about 20 miles of around town driving to get used to the heavier pedal but the start out and shifting are much smoother. i don't even see the need to put on the C5 spring. the pedal returns to full height and doesn't rattle. worth watching, but i like it with no spring just fine.
i have been soing the ''ranger'' clutch fluid ''flush'' regularly. can't hurt.

That's exactly what I did. Some have said that the spring is needed to return the pedal to the full up position, but I don't see how that's possible. I LOVE the feel of the pedal with the spring out. I even tried the C5 spring, but I took it out and I'm leaving it out.

Put the C5 spring in my '08 today and it is as described: Smoother with a much more linear feel to the clutch engagement point. Did a few laps with the spring out as well and that feels great too, though a little stiffer. In light of the fact that my wife will be driving the car a bit, I left the C5 spring in for the lighter pedal. Well worth the <$7 and 5 minutes it took to do the swap...

Glad to hear it makes a difference. I probably need to look at doing it too.
