Navigation Hick-Up

Navigation Hick-Up
My wife and I are having a great ride on a wonderful July 4th afternoon in north Ga. I had been using the navigation system to get to a "saved" destination. It had been about an hour since we reached our destination, and the system went into "standby". I hadn't pulled out the disc yet.
I go to open the door, in the traditional manner, push the button to make the front facia pull up out of the way, to access the button to eject the DVD disc. The facia opens, I pull out the DVD disc. I push the button to make the facia drop back into place, and nothing happens. I try the button again. Nothing ! I try two or three more times. Nothing.
I'm interrupted at an intersection where a local Sheriff is chasing a car full of "young kids" with sirens wailing, and one kid jumping out of the car at the intersection while the car is still moving. Nice afternoon for a car chase. Then over the next 10 minutes, several other Sheriffs cars or state troopers get in the chase. Quite entertaining.
So I go back to the navigation problem. No response still. I can't get anything, FM, XM, NAV, anything to respond. I also notice that the clock is locked up also. So knowing that all this stuff is a computer system, I decide to "reboot" the system by turning off the car, and restarting the car. Nope. Same response. So I decide to ignore the problem and enjoy the rest of my ride home.
Thursday morning I call the dealer for an appointment to look at the NAV system.
Later in the afternoon I decide to humor myself and see if the system has "fixed" itself. I start the car, and everything is working fine, even the clock has reset itself.
Aren't computers in cars wonderful!!
Anyone else experienced this ???

Never heard of such... Software is such a lovely thing
Just out of curiosity, why were you removing the NAV disk? I haven't touched mine since I looked last July to see what the rev number was.

nav. disc removal
I always take the disc out. I imagine if the disc stays in the drive, it is probably "running" all the time, even if you aren't using it. Just thought I would save the DVD drive from any unnecessary use.

Instructions to use NAV system say "Insert Disk", nothing about remove disc when you're done using the NAV. Put it back in and leave it. Also, I've read in the forum that unexplained "things" like this can happen and all that is needed is turn off the motor let it sit a few seconds and restart it and it's like Alt-ctrl-del and fixes stuff.

You will likely have more issues by taking it in and out than leaving it in. I have had a disk in my BMW constantly - it is in the trunk - with never an issue.

OK. Since I hope to have a new disc in a few weeks anyway, with the upcoming upgrade to come in July or August, I'll try leaving the disc in for a while, and see what happens. I just thought that leaving the disc in would also allow the disc to maybe be scratched etc. with road bumps etc.
As mentioned before, initially, I tried "rebooting" the car the same day during the trip, but I guess it just needed a "hard" "rebooting" for a longer period of time.

Kick the left front tire and stand on yer left leg. It also helps with the "re-boot"!

The only time my disc has been out is to put in the updated one. I have had my system lock up (playing music, but nothing on screen). I restarted the car and that fixed it.

Actually, you have a bigger chance of scratching the DVD by removing it, storing it, and re-inserting it than by just leaving it in the drive. The drive is by far the safest place for it since when there nothing comes in physical contact with the area that contains data.

You are asking for trouble by removing and reinserting the NAV disk all the time. Sooner or later you will scratch it and then your problems will really start until you get a NEW disk. I don't understand what is really the logical reasoning for removing it all the time.

You might have a case if we talking about a hard drive where the read/write head hovers just microns above the disk surface, but the head on a DVD drive has a much larger gap and is much less prone to having a head crash due to bumps.
