I use the one from Escort. Saved my rear a few times. Not cheap, but cheaper than tickets and increase in insurance premiums.

This isn't very scientific, but I'll relate a couple of actual experiences in the vette. I have an 06 yellow C6 convertible that I picked up with museum delivery. *background* I have owned Nissan(Datsun) Z's since my first in 1972 to my last 2003...and started drooling over the vette when the C6 made its debut. I live in Cincinnati and on the way home from the museum, I found myself on the highway with a 350Z. I KNOW the Z's inside out and know their strengths and weaknesses and performance limitations. We were having a great time of it all the way up to Northern Kentucky...and at one point close to the Florence Mall on I75, I punched it in the left lane to just about 100mph. *more background* I have a Val 1 radar detector, and anyone that owns one knows that while it picks up laser...usually about the time it tells you it's there, the cop is putting it in drive to come out after you. That is...IF it tells you at all since the lidar beam is so small that he really has to be moving it around on you to finally hit the detector. So I figure anytime I actually hear it, he's been messing with me for a while.

Anyway...back to the story....as I punched it into the left lane at about 100mph, the Valentine went off telling me LIDAR. I never braked, but took my foot off the gas and spotted the patrol car on the left median ahead. As I went by him at 65, he was stomping his feet, throwing his arms around...very visibly pissed off...and glared at me as I went by....I am guessing here, but it seemed apparent that he could NOT get a reading on me at all. (I had no, and still don't have a front license plate on the car!) I chalked this up to who knows what...i was just damn lucky!!

Until a couple months later...Aug or Sept....I was driving locally and there is a 4 lane near me that splits apart going down a big hill, and when no traffic, it's a delight to get up to 70 or so...while the limit is 40 I think. This day...I got to the top and started down and all of a sudden the Val is sounding off for lidar. I drive this road alot...have never seen a speed trap there so I just ignored it. Until a sec or 2 later, the lidar warning came on again!! This time I saw the damn patrol car way down at the bottom, backed into a drive. I just thougt...crap...my first ticket in the vette. By the time I went by him, I was only doing about 30 and probably looking very sheepish. But he didn't even look my way....was shooting his lidar up the hill still. LOL

So net....there have been TWO times when I know i've been hit by the lidar, and both times for whatever reason, they could not get a signal off me!

Driving home at 3:00 am and doing @ 85mph on the freeway. Escort 8500 is on, suddenly I see blue & red lights behind me and afterward a nice ticket. Two cops were following me with their radio off for a while, distance was about 1000 feet, I could see the lights from my rearview mirror, never thought it was a patrol car. Moral of the story, when they will, they are smarter.
