How many C6 owners bought the C6 because the Camaro was no longer available?

Still regret selling my '69 Z-28 with all the "goodies" ie: factory headers,
special oil pan, etc etc.
This thread brought back some great memories...... sigh.

If a Camaro (naturally aspirated big torque V8 4-seater GM car) had been available last year, I most likely never would have considered a Corvette. (`05 GTO doesn't count... I need not explain why) It took me a while to justify buying a car with a mere TWO seats, as well as buying a car that was nearly twice the price of a Mustang GT.
I was never and still am not truly a "Corvette-guy"... nor am I a "sports car guy" or an "exotic car guy"... I'm a "classic American muscelcar guy". Fortunately, the Corvette is just as much an American musclecar as it is a sports car in my opinion. Just took me a bit to warm up to the "sports car" aspect of it.
I'm so glad things worked out the way they did because I never would have known the great joy of owning a mighty C6 if I wasn't "forced" to buy one. I have been able to experience first hand the incredible level of handling and power to weigh possible from such a car, something that I never would have experienced with a Camaro or similar.
I still love the idea of a Camaro or Challenger, but from a raw performance and pure fun point of view, the C6 is the ultimate. If my C6 was stolen tomorrow, I'd probably take a look at the Camaro and Challenger, but I know I'd buy another C6... because once you've had a certain level of performance, it would be hard or impossible (at least for me) to go backwards.
I think I may be a Corvette owner for life... kinda funny since there was once a day when I wouldn't even consider buying one. Thanks GM for taking away the Camaro for a while and forcing me into a Vette. I'm having a lot more fun now than I probably ever would have had driving a larger slower 4-seater hot rod... my lifetime driving experience has been significantly improved.
Oh yeah... side note... the fact that the C6 retains so much classic American musclecar heritage was a big factor for me... the big naturally aspirated pushrod V8, extremely important... also the fact that the styling is so superb and reflects the styling of the C2, etc... these things really helped when it came time for me to pull out the checkbook. If the C6 had been more representitive of a typical "exotic" car (and not a classic musclecar), I would not have bought it and probably would have just looked for a clean used older Trans Am or Z-28.

I had a 2000 Firebird Formula that I bought in late 1999. It was totaled in March ,2003. I paid MSRP $of 24,000, total from the Insurance Co. was $18,000. 3 years of driving for $6000 depreciation! My 'Vette has dropped $15,000 in 2 years! No new Firebirds in 2003, used Camaros and Firebirds were overpriced, C5's were HIGH $$. If GM had kept making the Formula (or Z28) I would have bought another one.

Yep, helped a co-worker with his. The engine was an Isuzu 1.8 liter diesel (also available in the LUV truck). His car was a 1983 with the 5 sp manual transmission. He put over 260,000 miles on it. With the gearing it had, it was fairly peppy around town. Out on the interstate, though, its lack of power was evident.

Quite the oppisite. I've always wanted a Corvette and would only want a Camaro if it was 68/69. Well the new concept Camaro comming out may fit the bill too As a 4 seater, I'm sure the back 2 seats will be pretty cramped though.
Totally unrelated to a Corvette, except as a cool Chevy muscle car

I am getting rid of my 2002 Formula to get a Vette. I think there is a huge difference between fbodies and the Vette, the fbodies are great cars across the board, but I think you are stepping up to another level, sportscar level, when you get a Vett. If there was a 2007 Firebird I would still be getting a Vette ( my dream car).

I own a Corvette because it's a Corvette. My other wants the new Camaro when it comes out in a drop top. V6, auto, pwr top. It's her style and for her it will be the right car to tote the grand kids around.

Just as a side note...when I owned my 2000 TA, all I wanted to do was be able to out perform the Z06 when it hit big a bit later. I spent almost $30K to get it to the point of handling and accelerating better than those C5 Z's, now that I own a Vette, all I want to do is out perform the new Z's....lol.I hope it won't cost as much $$$.

Camaro or Corvette;how about both
My first new car was a 1997 Camaro; I bought it for myself when I graduted from college. I could not afford the Z28 so I settled for the 3.8 L automatic with T-tops and 2nd gear start as pretty much the only upgrades. I have over 100K miles on this car now and it is still my daily driver. I've never regreted buying the Camaro and still enjoy maxing it out at 111mph every once in awhile. Actually hope to pull the engine out of it later this year to rebuild it and possibly modify it a little.
For my 30th birthday, I bought myself the C6. Had Camaro still been around it would have been a tough decision. I love the look of the C6 and think the new Camaro is sharp but a little more retro or art deco then my taste. Also, looking at the photos of the interior and talking to folks who have seen it in person, I think it is going to be obvious why there is such a big price difference between the LS2 equipped Camaro and the base Corvette. The Corvette is pure sports car and the Camaro is all about the muscle.

Camaro Pricing
While the Camaro in its late 60s heyday was an incredible car, the later models never got my tent up.
Chevy has a lot of work to do to compare with the 26K Mustang GT (the Camaro's competition) in the eyes of a car-buying public.
If they can put a V8 Camaro with at least 300HP for the same price as a Mustang GT, and keep it looking like the concept, they'll have a winner, and maybe even my money for a new daily driver car.

I've ALWAYS wanted a new Corvette of my own, any year model, during the past 44 years. Have never been a Chevy man, but have always considered myself a future Vette man. I only traded in my '04 Mustang GT because it was time for a Corvette to be in my garage!

Not necessarily true...plenty of people (me being one of them ) own and LOVE both cars.
And before this gets too far off on that whole wine and cheese sniffing/finer things in life type of 'holier than thou' tangent like it so often does just remember that Porsche 911 owners speak the same way about Corvettes (at which time THEY TOO need to be reminded of how Ferrari owners view Porsche owners and so on...).
