Default Blue Ridge Parkway

How much time should it take to drive the entire length of the BRP from the beginning (mile 0) to the end (mile 469)?

I'm estimating it will take roughly up to 10 hours. Ideally, I'll start it around 9am. I'd like to get it done by sunset, or soon after. Those type of roads are not "fun" in pitch black.

If it matters much, this would be either Thursday the 12th or Friday the 13th. Not as bad as on a weekend I suspect, but it's still that time of year with extra leaf watchers I'm sure.

One extended stop for food and rest along the way, and maybe a handful of short stops to catch some scenic views and stretch the legs, but overall the goal is to drive the entire length.

You should post this in the regional section. You'll probably get better answers there

10 hours would really be pushing it. Mostly the speed limit is 45 (or used to be - I haven't driven it lately) 12 - 13 hours would be a spirited ride with any stops at all - my .02.

I was on the southern end of the BRP last year in a rented C6 coupe, around Asheville, NC. That experience caused me to fall in love with the C6 and the BRP. Bicycles were everywhere and it was not on a weekend, so be careful and enjoy the ride. No need to get in a hurry. There are many places to stop and see/hike along the Blue Ridge. Also, you might check ahead of time on where you can get gasoline. Your car will burn more fuel than normal on that drive and it is not dotted with fuel stations. Bring a jacket. I'm jealous. We don't have anything like that in TX.

Drove the bottom half up to Boone last June with 5 motorcycle friends. We avg. about 40 for our trip, stopping every 45 minutes or so.

You can speed to 55 in some places, but why? Great cruising road in a vert or on a sport cruiser.

Stopped and got my Dragon sticker, too.

Still is 45, and a lot of fog this time of year. Sometimes really low visibility means you're lucky to do 20. Great route, in the nice weather, however. Plus a cop every 25 feet.

I had to hop off it after about two hours---if not I would still not be home.

I just did Skyline Drive and part of the BRP last month. If I remember correctly, the speed limit is 35 MPH for most of what I rode. For 469 miles it would take 13.4 hours if you didn't stop anywhere.

Where are you starting form? We began on Skyline Drive in Front Royal, VA (turns into Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway after mile 103) and took from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM just to get 53 miles before spending the night at Big Meadows lodge in the park. 35-45 mph, took time stopping at all the overlooks, small hiking trails and had to leave the parkway to get to a town 7 mile away for lunch, etc, etc. This is not the type of drive where you want to be pressed for time. Good luck with your trip

It's nice, but after about 4 hours or so you will be ready to get off. Lots of slow traffic this time of the year.

You're looking at two days minimum, and three to really enjoy it.

Rather than force yourself to finish it in one day, do a shorter segment and really enjoy it. You will be missing a lot if you don't stop at the really scenic overlooks and attractions.

There are great craft shops in the BRP at the Folklife Center near Asheville, and at the Moses Cone Mansion near Blowing Rock. Linville falls is not to be missed. There are some dynamite side roads off the parkway, too.

The country there is spectactular, especially from Cherokee to Boone.

I drove about 40 miles of it, centered around the Wintergreen, Va ski resort. This was during the week, in mid summer. Not only did I NEVER see a cop, I almost never saw another car. Too bad I was with the family in the CTS and not the C6! But it still was a great drive. Fantastic road and views.

Default Just got back from there

I went from Spruce Pine to Asheville and it took about 1.5 hrs and I was going over the speed limit until some cruising motorcycles got in front of me and we went 40. Traffic with motorhomes will slow you down as the color starts coming in when you are going. Don't think you can enjoy the trip and drive it in ten hours. That would be overly optimistic!!!! By the way, I have driven the parkway in the fall for years and I have yet to see a cop. Just lucky I guess, but I know they would nail you with no mercy on the BRP. Be safe..

I've done Blue Ridge on motorcylces many times and you just can't rush going thru it. If you want a thrill, go to US129 (Deals Gap) also, its only a short distance from Ashville. Enjoy
