55mph for 500? Who knew?
Upon picking up our new 07 vette, we promptly entered the turnpike in the 75 mph speed zone. Drove approx. 50 miles at speeds of 75-80mph with one short blast to 105 to avoid a gravel-slinging 18 wheeler. When I got home and was reading through the owner's manual, I came upon the 55 mph for the first 500 miles statement. How many owners know about the 55 mph for the first 500 miles?????
At 80 miles an hour I was up to 1800-1900 rpm's. (This is an automatic) We read one thread where the guy was holding his rpm's at 3500 and he was having excessive oil consumption. This is the reason I don't buy used vehicles.

Haaaahaaaaa, That's a miss print. There's suspose to be a decimal between the five and the zero!
at least, that's the way i read it. guess it could have been a speck on the page.

Drifting
I would think that varying the speed is a good thing, more important that 55 mph. How many new cars get picked up by a dealer from another dealership and how many of those are driven at 55 mph. Just hold the rpms down to a respectable level for the first few hundred miles.

I knew......because I read posts about it so often on this forum before mine was delivered. It was rough getting passed by VW golfs and polos and every piece of junk on the autobahn for 500 miles, but a friend invited me to go to an amusment park as a group that weekend and accepted. the park was a little over 200 miles away. So, well over 400 miles in the first weekend, and by the end of the work week, it was over 500 for weekend #2.
It has been suspectred that many people have had problems with the chattering in the differential because of not adhering to the break in period.
I will stick with abiding by what the manuals tell us is right. I figure the engineers put to together one hell of a great car, they may actually know alittle about what they are talking about.

From page 2-21 of the 2006 Owners Manual:
Starting and Operating Your
Vehicle
New Vehicle Break-In
Notice: Your vehicle does not need an elaborate
break-in. But it will perform better in the long run
if you follow these guidelines:
• Keep your speed at 55 mph (88 km/h) or less for
the first 500 miles (805 km).
• Do not drive at any one constant speed, fast
or slow, for the first 500 miles (805 km). Do
not make full-throttle starts. Avoid downshifting
to brake, or slow, the vehicle.
• Avoid making hard stops for the first 200 miles
(322 km) or so. During this time your new brake
linings are not yet broken in. Hard stops with new
linings can mean premature wear and earlier
replacement. Follow this breaking-in guideline
every time you get new brake linings.
Following break-in, engine speed and load can be
gradually increased.
This has been around for a very long time and is only a recommendation and is not NEW. I departed the NCM and with 10 miles I already hit the rev limiter.

Get Some!
Under 55 for 500 is the easy way to tell people not to go to red-line and to vary your engine RPM during the breakin, this is important for your piston rings, tranny, and rear end!!!

I always observe a break-in period on any new car. To demonstrate a little restraint in the beginning just might pay dividends in the long run. I feel the most important factor in a break-in period would be avoiding excessive RPMs.
With that in-mind, when my new LPE 403 motor was first installed, the LPE trained installer had the car on the dyno blasting 6,800 RPM pulls!

Burning Brakes
Usually, when you purchase a vehicle, some representative from the dealership explains things like that to the purchaser. The "55/500" rule has been pretty much standard with GM vehicles for as long as I can remember.

I felt like Sammy Hagar "I Can't Drive 55" for 500 miles......
at least, that's the way i read it. guess it could have been a speck on the page.
