What is that interior smell?

Yep,
That's the sweet concoction of a mixure of the plastics, adhesives, fabrics and metals used in the inside of the car. Every car brand has it's own distinct smell. I can still remember how my parent's 76 Plymouth Volare' smelled, and how my 76&77 cutlass-442's smelled. Both different, but both nostalgic.
I get that every once and a while in the car even after 38K miles on it. Especially in the winter when the heater kicks on.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Toxic adhesive residue.....

As the wine people would put it, the C6 has a good nose.

I noticed the same smell on my new Carver 396 Aft cabin, it has the same resin and plastic smell. I have 46,000+ miles on my car and on hot days it still has this smell. I've been boating for about 15 years and recognized this smell when i first picked up the car.

The smell in most cars are made up of a combination of toluene, acetone, xylenes, styrene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, ethylbenzene, ethylene glycol butyl ether, formaldehyde, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDBE). The last is a fire retardent added to plastic which is based on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's). The chemicals outgas, especially when heated by UV rays, and are very toxic. The Asian OEM's are on a big push to reduce the material outgas of these ad the use of these chemicals. There are actually smell test standards. Volvo has been the biggest improver in reduction. I personally like the smell and so do most Americans according to marketing research. In addition, most leathers have a chemical added to the dye per OEM's to give that "new car" leather smell for a longtime or so I've heard. There is the science lesson for the day!!!

In June 2003, I had bought a brand new Cobra vert in Savannah, GA, which is where we were living at the time. One afternoon, I packed my then 2 year old's car seat in the back and off we went for some top down leisure driving. He had just turned 2 and was starting to talk in broken sentences. We pulled up into one of the squares downtown. I looked back at him to make sure he was doing ok. He, all of a sudden, got this disgusted look on his face, shrugged his shoulders, and exclaimed "Dad....what that smell is?". A little off topic but it was hilarious. One of those things that you never forget.

Whenever I leave a bag in the car for the day, I always catch a wiff at some random time in the day when i use that bag again.
