Default I did it. 05 to 06 steering wheel conversion! (pics)

Like many of us 05 owners who hate the dough boy steering wheel, I decided to do something about it. After much research and months of waiting, I was able to obtain a 2006 steering wheel and 2006 air bag module for my 2005.

Here are some pics of the mod. I was able to do this myself with no special tools. I would like to point out that the 2006 air bag module does not plug into the 2005 car. The connections are different.

Thus I have the 2006 wheel and airbag module, but had to sacrifice my drivers side airbag. The horn does still work though. Actually it works better than the 05. Also the wheel makes driving this car a totally different experience. Enjoy.

Can't say it's ever bothered me, although the '06 does look better in those pics. Personally I'd choose the airbag over the wheel.

Sorry, but giving up an airbag so the wheel can look "cool", to me is just rediculous....

I have to agree!! Anyway possible way to switch the switches or make a jumper? Think I would have to investigate that. It does look good though.

I'm currently investigating swapping the cables. They run from behind the air bag, down the steering column to a controller behind the ashtray. I'll keep you posted.

This is an upgrade which, in my opinion, is totally unacceptable.

Just think, your Insurance Company gives you a discount for airbags. Now you don't have one protecting you. You get hit head on and the airbag does not deploy, my bet is they do not cover you.

You trade your car on another and do not disclose the de-activated airbag. A lawyer with this information will have a field day with you.

I think this mod is asking for trouble. Sorry, JMHO.

pretty sure i read recently that the jury is still out whether or not airbags actually do more harm than good in accident situations. a recent report (i will try to dig it up and post it at lunch) found that a greater percentage of collision related injury occurs from cars deploying airbags than those that are not equipped with airbags, or whose airbag systems fail in an accident.

It sounds like he's working on finding a way to get the airbag hooked up...I can't believe that a jumper or something couldn't be rigged. Funny how a recent thread about this had a copy of some letter saying that the column would not accept the '06 wheel...congrats on a job well done

IMHO that is like burning $$$$ and putting life in jepoardy for the wheel to look better
Pluse rigging the airbaght to function properly again
And you have no way of testing it untill it HAPPENS

If you ever sell you car i hope you tell the new owner or there could be a major lawsuit

Airbags SAVED my life in my 01 c5 when i got hit head on a t 55mph

But it does look GREAT

Pretty cool deactivating the airbag. Shows initiative and that "go-getter" attitude.

I think I'd stick to the air bag. IMHO the '06 wheel is no better looking than the '05. But each to his own!

Maybe this would be a job for an electrical expert...but there should be no reason it can't be done just because the plugs don't match??

thats what i was thinking...who cares about plugs as long as the right wires are connected and insulated.
