Default Radar Speed Enforcement in Nevada

Well after 23 years, I finally got a speeding ticket. Last time was on my way to get married...that's another story. I was on my way back from the Level II course at Spring Mountain (what a great time) just north of Jean, NV on I-15 headed back to San Diego mid morning last Saturday. I had my Escort 850 detector on, cruising with a bunch of other cars going around 85-90. I pull out to pass a car that's going around 85. I get a couple of blips on my Escort and then nothing, so I figure the NHP guy is going the other way. Just as I hit 90 passing the car, I get a full-on alert on the Escort, I hit the brakes, and see the NHP car in the median ahead just over a rise. The trooper writes me up for exceeding the posted limit, which he told me does not go on my license for insurance points, so I'll probably just pay the $190 fine.

I'm not complaining about getting busted, but for future reference does anyone know what kind of radar system the NHP uses. In CA my Escort usually goes of at least a half a mile or so before I get to the CHP unit, and you can see the signal get stronger as you approach the unit. Did I have an experience with "instant on" radar? Or am I using the Escort incorrectly?

I used to have an Escort, and it was a good detector. I think that the better the detectors get, the better the cops get.
It's just a guess, but probably instant on.

Sounds like you got hit by instant on radar. Those couple of blips you heard was likely him turning on his radar for a burst to clock a car ahead. He was probably waiting to clock cars in the left lane and ignoring everyone else.

Your lucky is it doesn't count for insurance. It doesn't work that way here in the east.

I agree he was probably using instant on and got you. They just love to shot cars in the left lane. Hey, it could of been worse.

Yes, probably instant on radar. That's why it sucks to be completely alone on the road: no weak brief blips from when he is zapping people ahead of you. If you're in the middle of nowhere on the highway and your radar detector gives a few bleeps, he is out there somehwere, and it is time to slow down for a mile or two.

If he gave you a ticket for speeding, it will go on your record. If he gave you a ticket for wasting resources(gas) then your fine.

And he did get you with instant on.........your detector worked fine...............just have to know the signs............

There is no indication on how many MPH over the limit I was, but I'm calling tomorrow anyway to verify what the Trooper told me.

I'm calling tomorrow to verify what he told me. There is no indication on the citation how much I was over the speed limit. All is said is "Basic Speeding-Exceeding Posted Limit"

once you find that out you may want to check the laws regarding highway driving in that area....i found out that here in california....65mph is the MAX that you can be doing on a highway/expressway that has a speed limit of lets say 45mph....if the cop sites you for 64 for example...technically if you fight it and show them the ammendment in their own books...it will say that you can safely be driving at a maximum of 65mph...basically at that point you have to justify that you were doing it safely...whch may be difficult...but possible and your chances go up a bit more....even the judge told me "you know you would have a case to get off according to this amendment but you were doing 69 so i cant do anything about that...".......he gave me the option o going to traffic school so whatever....

my x50 doesnt go off much .....dont know why...havent really had a cop with a radar on near me to have it go off...

Your Radar Detector SUCKS ***. If you had the Valentine One you would have been able to see what direction you were going. So you would have known he was in front of you. By the way it was not instant on he used. It is a new technology called POP. It gives a short and I mean very short burst of Ka or X band radar made by MPH industries.
This was your first alert. Check this out.

from what i have read the v1 and x50 work very similar...only major difference with the v1 is the arrows that, like you stated, point to you the direction of the cop....

not to mention the x50 is about 150 bucks cheaper....never used the v1 so i cant tell you out of personal opinion but only from what i have read on different sites on just randomly online....

btw you can enable POP on the x50....i believe POP is a bit sensitive and catches a LOT of other "noise" though so your rd will be going off all the time...

Default Unusual...

I cruise the Las Vegas to LA route all the time and rarely see working NHP cars on the section from Las Vegas to Primm. Usually they're closer to Las Vegas trying to get everyone to slow down coming north. The few that have been down there have usually been responding to wrecks and overheats. They also seem to like to work with the folks who regulate motor carriers and weigh big trucks on the side of the road. I think you're tempting fate to run in the 90's there anyway -- usually there's too much traffic.

The NHP uses K band radar and the LVMPD uses Ka. No one in Nevada uses X anymore. It's pretty easy to tell who's lighting you up with a decent radar detector. But I agree with the other guys -- if he's flipping instant on, a decent radar detector would have caught that residual signal. So it's time for a new radar detector!

Gregg.

I've had a V1 for about six years now, and I'll never buy anything else again. For the most part, I drive like I'm verifying a parade route, but it doesn't hurt to use protection...
