C6Matt, unfortunately it's easy to think we can get that extra 10 miles in when we start to yawn. But the truth is most don't find their limit until it's too late! Consider yourself lucky to be alive, and to not have killed someone else as well!

It happened to me once, and i woke up will still in cruise control crossing the grass median towards oncoming traffic ! The only thing that woke me up was hitting a sign in the median...otherwise i would have went directly into oncoming traffic.

Consider and damage to your car as blessing that it wasn't your life!

Now hopefully you will pull over the second you get tired to rest, grab coffee, or anything to re-charge for those last few miles home!!

Default Send a thank-you note to Michigan Dept. of Transportation!

Hey C6Matt - be thankful you hit a jersey barrier on the freeway which is designed to avoid huge damage in collisions by having a lip about three or four inches up from the bottom and going up with a curved sidewall over to the top rail.

Here in the Phoenix area on our newer freeways, the idiots we have running our D.O.T. have installed 4 strands of steel wire rope on metal fence posts every 50' or so, instead of spending the money on concrete jersey barriers. There have been deaths in simple collisions due to cars going thru the wires or jumping over the cables hitting oncoming traffic.

So, you and most Americans that drive on rural freeways get the best protection with jersey barriers, even when you fall asleep at the wheel.

Don't you think the driver will probably be wide awake by the time the cop pulls you over and walks up to the window.

Just curious ... What was your plan if, when you got it up to 85 or 90, everything wasn't alright?

You'r all correct.. dont let my lowly antics bring you down, my destroyed wheels didn't make me second guess my actions at all (aside form the hundeds of blind orphans playing in a freeway )... your words on an interet forum will make me change my mis-led life... Thankyou!!!

sheesh, I had no Idea there were this many perfect people on the forum, aside from me, of course

From the way he described it I didn't get the impression that it actually was a Jersey barrier he hit.

I live in New Jersey so fortunately we have them all over (from what I understand they are named that because we were the first to have (invent?) them ).

Ah ha, so your "plan" is your own infallibility, and we already know how effective a planning tool that is, based on your "engineering" decision to go ahead and continue driving before you fell asleep.

Sometimes you don't plan on falling asleep... it can just happen. It's happened to me while driving. One time I was 1/2 mile from my house and I'm lucky to have woke up and be here to write about it. Another time I was starting to nod off. Jumped off the next exit, pulled over and started jogging up and down the street for a few minutes. That worked for a little while but I was still tired. Most of know that we should do this but, how many actually pull over and goto sleep when they are only about 20 minutes from home?

Thank God for the Jersey Divider. The lip on the ground end is designed to absorb the initial impact and slow the vehicle while the tapered upper end is designed to avoid scraping. I slammed into one myself when I was younger and dumber with my first sports car a 300zx. I was pleasantly surprised when I got out of the car thinking that I wrecked the whole driver side and realized I got off easy with white walled tires.

Consider yourself really lucky....the jersey divider isn't on all freeways....

No sermon here, I just hope you don't have that happen again.

Good luck with the rim replacement.
