TRUNK LID "STILL" WILL NOT POP UP!
I had this TRUNK LID problem from day one on my 02 Z. It will only pop up about 1/8". I have to open and shut the door to get it to open enough to get my fingers under the lip to open it. Sometimes I can bump it with my fist and it will pop up. Took it in to the dealer and they "SAID" that they replaced both hydraulic props and adjusted the striker.. This did not fix the problem. :mad
Has anyone figured out why this problem happens and if so there is a fix for it?
I am guessing that I got another bad set of props OR they didn't replace them.
Anybody out there that has had a successful repair to the trunk lid pop up problem?
Thanks in advance.

I had a sucessful repair Bill.
My 99 experienced this problem and the repair was a new latch (back in the year 2000 or 01).
The metal spring was updated to a stiffer spring.
On your 2002 I would think it all ready has the updated latch.
So first look to the spring. Lube or replace the assembly.
Some further quality time latch adjustment could help.
Perhaps the weatherstrip is sticking to the truck lid?
Perhaps the struts are binding (mounting holes are off)?
Good hunting.

Bill,
Had the same problem with my vert. Took it to 2 different dealers ended up fixin it myself. I fixed it by bending the spring (Flat) on the release mechinism in the trunk. The release spring was not making full contact with the stricker. Hope this helps.

Re: TRUNK LID "STILL" WILL NOT POP UP! (The Yav)
I've got the same problem on 02 Z06. It seems to work fine in hot weather but doesn't open correctly in cool temperatures. I just try to slip my fingers under each corner and lift. This is getting a little old. So, this may sound stupid, but where exactly is the spring located? I'm happy to try to fix it myself, I just haven't tried yet.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I had the same problem. After I lifted the carpet away from the latch on the deck lid and sprayed WD-40 on it problem was solved.

Thanks for the replies!
I WD-40-ed that thing to death and got NO improvement!
Looks like the dealer will have to install new gas struts AGAIN and a NEW latch! :mad :cuss
Atleast it's their DIME
Thanks again!

Try these steps:
1) Pry the carpet away from the latch
2) Notice that latch is on a metal platform that actually moves a bit
3) Pry up on that whole assembly to bring it up a bit, I think it sags over time.
4) Spray the entire latch and spring with WD-40
5) Put the carpet back
6) Take WD-40 on a rag and wipe down the entire weather stripping around the trunk
This should help a bit, it might not go up consistently still. If you press down and let go quickly once you have unlatched the trunk, it should come up the rest of the way. Good luck!

Here is a solution:
Get a 1+ inch wide piece of nylon ribbon about 4 inches long. If you don't have ribbon any piece of nylon material will do i you cut it to size. Get a color similair to your car for th obvious reasons. Affix it to either one of the rubber feet on the trunk or tie it to the trunk catch. You can cut the ribbon so only about 1qtr or 1half inch stick out from the trunk lid. If you do that you can simply pull up on the ribbon to open the trunk.
I don't have the problem and it may sound a bit clugey but it will work and saves fruitless trips to the dealer. I don't think there is really a solution for this unless they (Chev) start making stronger/larger pistions in the trunk devices

I am having that problem too on 02 ZO6. I will try to use WD40 as stated from the other members. I hope it works. :chevy

Re: TRUNK LID "STILL" WILL NOT POP UP! (MikeNMaxZO6)
I took my latch all apart, bent the spring some, removed some metal from the latch housing that stops the srping from going *up* any farther, added a little metal spacer on the non-moving end of the spring to incease tension, polished the spring and the strike, adjusted the whole assembly very carefully, added a half-turn of "wedge" :D into the trunk rubbers (on each corner of the decklid) and WD'd it plenty. And I wiped down the gasket and sealing surface of the lid with clean, wet rags to remove any sticky gunk. Then I wiped a very, very thin layer of Ivory Liquid on the gasket to ensure that there's no sticking.
It worked. I get about 3/4 inch of "pop", but not much more. Thanks, GM, for using the low-bidder on this latch!

Re: TRUNK LID "STILL" WILL NOT POP UP! (Bill Curlee)
I tried WD-40 the first time I had this problem, but WD-40 is more of a freeing agent than it is a lubricant, so it started sticking soon after that again. Now I spray a bit of moly dry lubricant (molybdenum disulfide) into the mechanism, and it frees it right up. It hasn't gotten sticky again since then, but using the moly is now part of my routine along with greasing the door hinges and lubricating the window and trunk seals. Hope this helps!
