Default FINISHED TODAY, Sport Seats into Z06

I finally finished my Sport Seats into a Z06 (with memory seats) project! Here’s a verbal on how to do it. Don’t have a digi cam and didn’t write it all down in a detailed manner, but it is straightforward once you get the concept.

My Z06 has memory seat option.

For the driver’s side, the issue to address is that Z06 has one wiring connector that hooks the seat wiring to the body wiring harness, whereas the Sport Seats have two connectors. A black one (the only one on the Z06) basically provides power for the seat functions and memory. A blue connector is related to the retractable steering column “easy exit” feature available in Coupes and verts.

When I just threw the Sport Seat into the driver side of the Z06 and only plugged the black one in (connector size matched and apparently so did the wire colors), the seat did not work correctly (up wasn’t up, down wasn’t down, etc).

Several people tried to be helpful and told me I needed a different driver side seat wiring harness, even giving me a part number. But, what I found when I talked to Bob at Fitchner’s was that only one wiring harness is available from GM -- the same one I have in the Sport Seat I bought. Can’t buy the Z06 seat harness from GM, and there isn’t a third option to buy a harness for memory seat but no telescoping steering wheel function.

So, I unbolted both driver seats from both tracks (the Sport Seats I bought were complete with tracks and wiring harness) (using half inch open end wrench and lots of band aids later) and peeled the black tape off both wiring harnesses. Both Seat Control Modules were the same part number (10435193) so that was good.

Then I went wire by wire (this X color wire goes from this connector position to that connector position) to make the Sport Seat harness match the original Z06 harness, marking each wire as I verified they were the same. There were of course a bunch of little wires for power, ground and control wires for the air pump and bladder seat controls, so I left those alone.

The only differences I found were in the wire locations on the black and green connector on the Seat Control Module. Three or four of the wires in the Sport Seat harness were in different connector locations at the SCM (the colors were in the correct position at the other end of that sub-harness that fed power to the seat motors). I popped those wires out of the connectors (using paper clip to release the holder thingie) and rearranged them to match the original Z06 harness locations.

For the blue connector, I just snipped all those wires off and covered the ends with tape and threw the connector away.

Bolted it in and it works like a champ. Got all the air bladder control functions and the memory works.

For the passenger side, you have to add power to drive the Sport Seat power functions. I bought a Coupe passenger side wiring harness Gene at the KarShop. Gene suggested replacing the Z06 harness with the Coupe harness. When I looked at the two dozen or so connectors on the Coupe harness, I decided it would be easier to just take the passenger side seat power harness/connector out of the Coupe harness and graft it into the Z06. Basically just taking 3 wires out of the Coupe harness, and plugging two of them into the back the Z06 fuse box in the same locations as they came from in the Coupe harness. Third wire was ground.

It also works properly.

Now if you could only add "bladder" control features for any female passengers.

that would be great, but I didn't see that on either the options list or the schematics

Great reading. Take the pictures. These Z06 seats sux - my mazda has more lateral support. I really missed my sport seats. Heck I'd be interested in grafting just the driver seat, screw the passanger.

Congrats and very cool. One of the things I hate about my Z06 is the seats. I had the Sport Seats in my 2000 coupe and I miss them.

A different question, since the official line from GM was that the standard seats were a part of the Z06's "faster at all costs" theme: Do the sport seats weigh a lot more than the Z06 seats?

TIA,

Hi NealB -

Very cool - thanks for sharing that info - I think that would be a great upgrade - and then maybe some Vette Essentials - Ken does some neat things with the sport seats -

If you had the "rocking seat" problem before, do you still notice it after this upgrade?

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

best regards -

Tom

the Z06 drivers seat probably weighs a pound or two less, given no air pump or air bladder stuff like with the Sport Seat

haven't jumped on the bathroom scales, but the passenger Sport Seat probably weighs 10 pounds or so more, given power motors and so forth as compared to no power stuff at all

guessing, maybe 15 pounds total difference, but then the Z06 is the "ultimate"

MQQN

haven't noticed the rocking yet, but haven't driven more than 20 miles since I completed the project

Thanks Neal,

Sure would have been nice if they gave us the choice as to whether we wanted to carry 10-15# and have a better looking, more comfortable, and better supporting interior.

I miss my sport seats, but I'm too lazy to put them in myself. Good work!

You gotta host the pic on a website buddy, and then link to it from here. If you don't have a site, then goto http://www.cardomain.com and get a free one. Then upload the pics to that site, then link to the pics in a post here. If you need more instructions, just let me know, - I've been there too - and not long ago either!! :seeya
