Default New Best in the Z06

Went to State Capitol here in Baton Rouge last night.. Forecast was for temps in the mid 50's with humidity @ 60% going up to 70% as the night went on.

Only change since last time was my airbox... I removed the Halltech T1 and replaced it with the stock airbox (minus the front cover) and a K & N

We got there when the gates open and had enough time for the car to cool down... Only got three runs

1st Run

R/T: .522
60: 1.929
1/8: 7.969
1000: 10.271
1/4: 12.221
MPH: 115.75

2nd Run

R/T: 2.715 yeah, I know.. I staged too deep, had a brain fart when the top lights went off and decided I needed to back up and restage.. as I was doing this, the yellows started to fall and I just put it back in first and revved up to 5k and launched.. lol
60: 1.859
1/8: 8.086
1000: 10.499
1/4: 12.508
MPH: 112.72

My time was off because I missed third.. Would've been a good run too..

And the new best:
3rd run:

60ft: 1.764
1/8: 7.710
1000: 10.009
1/4: 11.954
MPH: 117.69

:hurray:

Wow! Very good. A couple of questions/clarifications. So you actually went quicker/faster with the stock airbox than a Halltech? What is the ziptie mod? Also, best launch is at 5000 rpm? I have had my '01 to the track only once, and ran 12.81 at 113.1 driving like an old lady (2000 rpm launch, no WOT shifts, etc.). That was in 90 degree heat too. Any tips would be appreciated.

Yeah.. As I mentioned on corvetteforum.com, my last few outings at the track, every time out produced 113-114 mph traps (in cooler weather) and a Check Engine light. I won't know the Halltech, but the ziptie mod put me back up in the higher MPH bracket. It could be my own mechanical ineptitude when it comes to installing the Halltech, or it could have been the fact that the 02 is descreened and didn't like the extra airflow... Either way, I picked up the lost mph with the zip-tie mod.

What is the ziptie mod?
Ziptie mod is taking the stock airbox, removing the front cover and holding the filter in place using zipties.. Basically an open filter on the stock airbox.

Also, best launch is at 5000 rpm?
I'm using NITTO 555R Extreme Drags (Drag radials), and depending on track prep, anything less than 5000 bogs the car. The last run was a little over 5000 rpm and whereas I used to feather the gas pedal then get on it, this time I went straight to the floor with the pedal.. This gave me a little bit of wheelspin (although not anything worth mentioning) and kept me from bogging. I've found that the nittos hook better if you spin'em a little off the line to get some momentum going.

I have had my '01 to the track only once, and ran 12.81 at 113.1 driving like an old lady (2000 rpm launch, no WOT shifts, etc.). That was in 90 degree heat too. Any tips would be appreciated.
On street tires I was launching around 2000 rpms. (By the time I made it to the track with my street tires, however, they were already at the wear bars... I couldn't manage anything better than 2.0 60ft times).

As far as shifting goes, I'm basically speedshifting (lifting only slightly on the gas as I shift) when the HUD's shift light illuminates. I've been told that the HUD shift light is wired directly to the PCM, which is the most accurate RPM reading.

Going back to the Halltech.. With an 01, you will probably see some pretty nice gains, but I just wasn't impressed with mine. I took it off for two reasons:
1) The lean code it kept triggering made the pcm run the car rich, robbing power.. this could've been due to poor install or it might be the intake.. Dunno
2) I autocross every now and then and I wanted to stay in Super Stock class while keeping the extra gain in HP.. the zip-tie seems to give me that gain while staying basically stock.

Cliff,

How much fuel do you carry in the tank? Your optimum tire air pressure (street and drag radials)? Competition mode? Or "off?"

Well that's a funny thing.. My "RESERVE FUEL" notification came on on the DIC about a mile before the track, so I figured I'd put about 5 gallons in and be just over 1/4 of a tank... My calculations were waaaaaay off.. I was running at a little over half a tank the whole night.

Tire pressure... When I was on street tires, I tried running it at 20, which is waaay too low (I never considered the fact that they are low profile tires).. A fellow Z06 driver told me later than 25-27 is optimal for the trackm but by then I had drag radials.

On Nittos, I cut my best 60ft times at 18 psi. Anything less than 16 will get poor traction..

I always run in competition mode.. I like having that extra barrier of safety in case I hit a patch of oil or something down the track.

Thanks...good info to have. One more question. Your dyno mentions 2400 miles. How many do you now have? Of course, this question has more to do with break-in miles over anything. Had similar experience with my ZR-1. First dyno numbers were lower than some years later, with a bit more miles (over 10K at second dyno).

I currently have just over 8000 miles (Something like 8060 during the runs).

I think a lot of my mph increase has to do with the airbox changing.. The lean code caused the PCM to dump fuel on the mixture.. Although I can't confirm this (other than to say that I threw a code every time I went to the track and it was the same lean code each time).

I'm confident that had I used the ziptie setup on street tires, I would've seen at least 116+ traps and a few tenths lower in my ET.

Many thanks....hope to see you at the coming Corvette Forum Cruise-In. By then, you'll really have the black beastie dialed-in. You can give me some pointers. I still have not had much driving with mine and am concerned on loading it up at the drags. Probably later in the summer when I get more miles chalked in.

Funny you mention the traction control. I never gave it a thought when I had my ZR-1 (1990). And use to do 6K shifts in it. I even use to do the 55 mph down to second gear and catapult runs to 130 mph. The rear end would sway a bit and grab traction like a "bat out of hell."

Now, with my Z06....I'm even apprehensive in going to "competition mode." Guess I just need to increase my comfort band with the new ride. Get some more seat time.

I dunno if I'll ever be able to make it to a Cruise-in anytime soon.. My work schedule doesn't give me much room for long trips these days... But if you ever make your way down to Louisiana, I'd be happy to help you hit 11s :D

I never run with TCS on, but active handling is good for those moments when you swing the rear out.. I've down it a couple of times on the street.. (Remember I have street tires that are at the wear bars)... The rear end will come out so far that AH will engage and snap the car back straight.. Once AH engages to save your butt, you know it's a good insurance policy to keep.. :)

BTW, she's a blue beastie, not black.... Blue is faster than black :D

Sounds like an "invite" for a nice road trip to Baton Rouge (by way of the Big Easy). You might just get a knock on the door one of these days.

Good luck and take it easy on the natives......
