What oil/filter you guys using.
My Z06 has 985 miles on it and I'm ready to change the oil and filter.
I'll be doing this at home.
What oil filter are you guys using? Where's a good place to get one? Dealer?
What about oil? The temp here rarely gets below 32F even in the winter.
Would 5w30 be better than 10w30?
5w30 looks about like water it's so thin. I don't like it much.
What say boys and girls????

You can't go wrong with Mobil 10W30 and the Mobil 1 filter.
That is what I would run if I didn;t race the car, since I do I run the Deep Purple racing oil w/Mobil 1 filter.
I live inAtlanta, like you said 10W is plenty thin for these parts, plus it has fewer viscosity enhances than the 5W30 (which I like).
Les

Looks as if we've got the filter nailed down.
Hmmmm now what about the 5w vs. 10w Mobil 1 ?
5w is sooooo thin..... 10w is TWICE as thick at minimum.......
I've run 10w30 Mobil 1 in the LS-1 Fbody for 48,000 miles. (since new)
It still uses no oil between 4,000 mile changes.
Why do you support 5w or 10w boys and girls ???

I use AMSoil 5w 30 but i may switch over to 10w 30 soon. Oil temps are a lot cooler since i switched from mobile 1. For a filter UPF44

I have been sticking with what the manual recommends
10/30 Mobil synthetic+Delco filter
doesn't necessarily mean it's the best, so many folks on here find a way better than what the general suggests in so many areas on these vettes!

I follow the general on this one too...5W30 Mobil 1, and get this a STANDARD PF44 Delco filter! Shame on me. Levettegrl, you mentioned following the manual, but using 10W...where's that in the manual? Mine calls for 5W, but like others, I agree the 5W is thin, and living in the south, cold temps are not a concern for me.

Re: What oil/filter you guys using. (VetNutJim)
The only difference between 5W30 and 10W30 is the cold temperature weight, with 5W30 being lighter. Once to operating temperature, the oil weights are the same: 30.
During cold startup, 5W30 has the advantage in that it flows faster to reach engine components faster than 10w30 can. This is especially critical for tight tolerance engines such as the LS6. Which is why the owner's manual recommends 5w30, NOT 10w30.
Stick with what the owner's manual says. There have been cases in the past such as GM's 2.8L V-6 where lifter damage occurred if anything heavier than 5w30 was used. Deviating from manufacturer's recommended oil weight is asking for trouble, IMO.

Re: What oil/filter you guys using. (VetNutJim)
Just did my first oil change at 3100 miles. Used a PF-44 and 10w30 Mobile 1 which came free with the car.
Manual recommends 5w30 as perferred, but 10w30 is acceptable. Clearly states any higher viscosity especially 20W50 NOT RECOMMENDED.
The 5w30 as addressed flow easier cold, and also would contribute to better gas mileage. Even a lot of 4 cyclinder engines recommend lower viscosity oils now a days.
Here is my issue though. Prior to oil change pressure ran 40-42 psi cold and about 32 psi hot cruising.
Now that I have 10w30 and PF-44 (not from chevy dealer)
Pressure runs cold at idle 45-50+ psi, and driving as high as 60+. Hit 70psi with acold engine when I had to step on it in traffic (3500 rpm). Hot it runs 40-45 psi , basically 15 psi higher. Not sure if the after market AC/DELCO filter and/or the 10w30 has caused the change.
The PF-44 that came off the car had a red gasket, the part store version Black. I will probably monitor fuel efficiency for a tank, than dump the oil and go to 5W30 with the same filter and see what happens. The high oil psi has me concerned.

Re: What oil/filter you guys using. (GCubed)
GCubed,
I was not aware that the manual said the 10W was an acceptable substitute. I will probably go with that at the next change as our climate is pretty moderate here. As for your increase in oil pressure, nearly everyone I know saw an increase after their first oil change (I saw about 3-4 pounds on my 01 Z06, dad saw about 10-12 on his 2000 Coupe). Do a search and you'll find more information, but the general consensus is that you are removing the assembly lube and dirt particles from the initial engine build (which have both thinned down the factory installed oil, and partially plugged the filter). I'd rather have more pressure than less!

Mobil One, 5W-30, AC Delco PF-44,
I have run all day (9-13 hrs) through the desert with the AC on, (110 degrees ambient) at high cruising and passing speeds. I would be comfortable running 0W ,5W, 10W-30, but I run 5W-30 for it is usable and standard (per owners' manuals) for my whole fleet of vehicles (4) My oil consumption in the Z06 is between 4000-5000 per quart. On my 3 Toyota Landcruisers the consumption is 1/4 qt every 14k. I use 15k oil change intervals for all four vehicles.

Re: What oil/filter you guys using. (Black2001Z06)
BLK01Z06, Thanks for that info. I will monitor it and fuel consumption. Nothing like running your own test. I am just not use to pressure running that high at low RPMs. I have yet to really get on it since the oil change. Will be Interesting to see what pressure I get with hot oil and high RPMs.

5W30 Mobil 1 like most everyone else... but I'm using a K&N Oil Filter. The K&N's a bit pricey, but my baby's worth it. :yesnod:
