CAI on a 01 Z06
Ok folks, before i purhcase my Cold air intake, i need to get as mnay opinions as poosible. i ahve asked for some help on some other forums, but nobody is responding. And yes, i know i can use the search button, which i did, but now that the vararam is out and used, maybe some of you will have a fixed opinion on what CAI would get the 01 the most HP/TQ.
I was thinking about getting the Donaldson, but if thats not the best bang for $, or if it doesnt give you the most amount of HP, then i dont want it.
Can some1 help me and let me in on whats the best for the 01? thanx

For about 45 bucks you can buy the '02 cover with the much larger inlet from Fichtner. That and the OEM filter are the best price/performance deal, and the OEM filter box aspirates cold air too.

So it looks like its between the Vortex and the Donaldson.
So if you were given the choice, what would you get for the 01 Z??
I am ordering the right one tomorrow..what do you say?

I have an '01 and I bought the Donaldson Blackwing. It's proven to substantially increase Airflow. I'd have to agree with Duke that the '02 stock inlet is the best deal. In retrospect that is what I would buy now.

I have purchased a Volant twin filter intake system. It comes w/ dual filters, bigger air bridge, silcone tubing to put between the throttle body and the air bridge. Complete package you can pickup for about $250. Best deal I've found and I'm very happy w/ the extra *kick* and the cool intake sound.

Here is the difference between the 2001 and 2002 Z06 air filter covers...
I would also consider just taking a hole-saw attachment to a drill and making holes in a stock air filter cover...

The air inlet to the filter housing is on the cover. Contact Ken Fichtner's parts department. You just remove your existing cover and install the new one in its place. It takes about 30 seconds. When you compare the two covers side by side you will see that the opening in the '02 cover is three to four times of the size of the '01 cover.
That's why the earlier cars are responsive to aftermarket air boxes. The OEM cover was restictive, so GM just redesigned it with a larger opening to get rid of the restriction.
GM has a very severe water ingestion test, and that may be why the earlier opening was restrictive, but they eventually got around to opening it up and passing the test. Aftermarket boxes are not subjected to this test.
The larger air filter opening contributes several of the 20 HP higher rating of the '02 LS6 engine, and to the best of my knowledge it will retrofit to all earlier C5s back to '97.

Yes, bang for the buck go with the 02 LS6 lid. I just dyno'ed my car this morning with an aftermarket intake and stock unit. The aftermarket one netted me only 1 rwhp/2rwtq.:mad Goes to show that the stock unit is already pretty good.

Go to Ken's Newsletters section. The dealership phone number and web site should be somewhere in there. You really want to contact his parts dept. They do a lot of mail order business.
Also, remember it's a three day holiday weekend, so many are out and about and left the computer at home or work.

Ask yourself why Lingenfelter, Rippie, and Mallett among others use Donaldsons. For a couple hundred bucks, it will awaken the '01 beast within.
