May I put a twist on this? Curious what everyone would say about doing a cam and FAST intake without doing heads. It all just seems like once you start digging into the engine, you almost SHOULD do everything so that EVERYTHING compliments itself. I suppose no matter what you are leaving something out there.

I did a cam before headers. I actually did heads and cam before headers.
I had a 219/230 cam with an UDP and vararam and it made 370 rhp and 358 rwtq.
I added PRC LS6 2.5 heads and made 384 rwhp 363 rwtq. Don't know what baseline stock numbers were, but it is a 2001.

What were your numbers after headers?

I would do headers at the same time and get the tune for both. You'll save money and have less downtime.
Do your homework on the total package based upon your (realistic) goals. Don't just throw parts/money at the set-up piecemeal.

Just save up until you have enough for the full deal, you already got the cam, did you check out melrose headers too?

Depends where you live and what emissions testing is like. I could pass a sniffer test barely running no cats on my bolted G8, but I had an excellent tune. That being said, I would never do that again because the smell can be a dead giveaway to a cop and it just plain stinks especially sitting at a light in the middle of the summer or through a drive-thru etc.

I have not looked into Melrose, or even heard of, but I will now.

You want to make the motor breath the best it can BEFORE you break into the motor. Air intake, Long tube headers (1 3/4), Cat back exhaust, and a dyno tune. Most places will charge you $400 ish for a full dyno tune. Once you install more mods the tuner normally will charge a much smaller fee per hour for a tune.
Once thats done, then you can save more $$ for parts for the motor. Cam, heads, Fast intake, TB... etc...

The cam is already ordered, custom grind through 510 Engineering, also push rods & springs. Going to probably do LS7 lifters as well.
I've decided to do headers too, just trying to get Texas Speed to wiggle on their price a bit, worse case I will just go no cats for now & save $250.
I've already got a vararam on the car, and a cat back system. The exhaust is stainless & sounds good, but was put on by a previous owner and has NO naming on it anywhere. More than likely it's a Vinci set up, that's what a plate in the engine bay says did work to it, but when I contacted them (3yrs ago) they couldn't give much info.
Appreciate everyone's input

Cliff notes: cam, rods, springs ordered. Buying headers too, just trying to get a better deal.

If you're going to be out there for the dyno day on the 3rd of next month maybe we'll cross paths.

Nice 510 Race Engineering will definitely get you setup with a nice custom grind. They did the build on my car for me last August. Great bunch of guys. Are you doing the labor yourself?

Very good friend of mine is a head mechanic at a dealer....so "we're" doing the install.
