Default Need help with cam decision ASAP!

I'd love some help choosing a big cam for my bolt on c5 z06..

1. Cleveland OH - for elevation purposes
2. Kooks LT Headers + catless x-pipe
3. B&b bullet exhaust
4. Vararam intake
5. BIG cam? ...

I will be leaving the car n/a for now. Nothing more soon. Maybe heads later this year.

Not too wild, just enough to use as a frequent spring and summer driver. I can deal with an "ok" rough idle. Not a cam only used on weekends. Maybe something specd as a stage 3.. Idk.

A custom specd big cam that would give me the best power + drive ability is what I'm looking for. I do use the highway very often, so that should be considered. Anyone who knows their cams like the back of their hand, please join in.

Thank you to all who help. I'm starting this installation this week, so I need some help.

Thank you!

There's so many choices. Go to you tube, there are hundreds of videos of different cams. We also have a number of supporting vendors that have many cams that work well with our motors. Search the forum and you will find the threads about cam choices. Good luck.

You might want to look at something in the mid 230's duration with lift around .600". I had a 232-236, .595"/.601" in my LS6 on a 114+4 lobe and it made good power everywhere with a set of CNC'd LS6 heads and a Fast 90mm intake. Driveability was good and it still got great hwy gas mileage.

I personally would not get a big cam. They shake the car too much, stink a lot, have a peaky powerband with torque loss down low, are harder on the valvetrain etc.

Get a custom medium to small sized cam that not only produces good peak numbers but more importantly the power under the curve.

Just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Call one of the vendors. Easy, quick, and you will get the best results.

I agree with LSX_NUT though. Stay away from telling someone you want a BIG cam. Bigger is not always better. My car makes great power and retains good drivability with a mild 227/234 113+2. Brian Tooley spec'd it.

Thanks, looking into something around there.

Oh okay. So I will be looking into a medium cam, as I don't want my car shaking too much and uncomfortable to drive. If I can get one spec'd by Brian tooley, that would be great. Anyone have any contact info? Thanks guys for your input

Call LG motorsports and talk to them about the g5x2 cam. I put in a g5x3 on a 112 last year and love it.

I was just looking at that g5x3 cam too. Do you know the specs? And does it require the pistons to be flycut?

You can google Brian Tooley Racing.

Martin from Tick performance is a vendor on here. He is a pretty good cam guy too.

My opinion only, is, keep it in the mid 220s and no more than .575 lift.

No need for anything more with a semi-daily driver.

The cam I had in my 01 Z was the GM hot cam. People laughed at me what I bought it, but the thing ran 11.0@121 first night out with it. And, I got 25 mpg on the highway. I drove the thing everywhere.

Good luck with your quest.

I believe it's around 610 lift.LG doesn't give u the specs on there cams. I've had it for a year now and love it. It does shake the car at idle wich I like.I took it on a trip and got 25 mpg on a 500 horse car. That's preaty good. And sounds mean at idle. With any cam it's going to change things alittle bit from what ur use to. The bigger u go the more things change. U learn to drive ur car again. I just finished putting a H/C/I setup in my c6 z. Waiting to get it tuned now. Way more radical then the c5. Call LG , tell them what u want and I'm sure they have what u need. I'm thinking x2 form what u said u wanted.my c5 z made 432 rwhp 398 rwtq

So true...I always wonder why guys go for such high lift numbers with stock 243 heads. Look at some flow charts, they stall right around .540 or so. The old GM ASA grinds puts out very impressive numbers and is easy on the valve train!!

So you want a "big cam" and want to maintain great drivability? That's a tough order to fill. Like others have said the bigger the cam the rougher the idle, the higher the power band will be, you'll have low speed surging issues, it won't be fun to drive. If all you're looking for are peak dyno numbers and drag times go with a big cam. I'd recommend trying to drive some cammed cars and decide what you want to do with the car. If you are just using it to cruise around you will probably regret getting a bigger cam.

Wow , this changes my mind a bit. I'm not too worried about the shaking idle, but if the car surges too much at low speeds, that wouldn't be good for my usual cruises around the city. And my mechanic suggests a stage 3 cam kit (238/242 .595/.595 112lsa)...

If your mechanic is also your tuner, then he should know what he can make work for your driving needs. It will stink, and you really don't need that big of cam, but remember to get the best springs, too.
