Default Should I cam my 03 z06

I have a mint condition millennium yellow on black 03 z06 with 13,5xx original miles.

My plans are LT headers , already have intake , exhaust , thermostat and a tune...

I am debating doing the ECS blower pack but it's pricey and lately have been considering a cam but I am concerned about camming it and killing the value of the car (opening the motor up with such low miles )

What are the avg gains with a cam and a tune with the other supporting mods listed above and would you or wouldn't you do it ...

Then if I decide to do it do I install it myself or pay for install I am more than capable of doing it myself yet I feel like to have the paperwork from a race shop makes it more credible for the future ...

Please share opinions thanks

It sounds like there is a very real possibility of you selling this car in the future. This is simple - DON'T cam it.

In fact, I would think twice about installing headers, too.

Yea, if you are uncertain about keeping it don't do it. If you do keep it for a while it would definitely be worth it!!!!

Its all in the buyer in the future. I was looking for a cam car with exhaust and tune. I would have paid more for mine but got lucky and found a good deal. You do limit your market with those mods but there are buyers out there that want everything that you plan on adding. You will most likely keep the car longer if you make it the way you want it. and you will enjoy it more. Is it going to kill you if you have it for sale for an extra year to find that right buyer.

My only other advise might be to sell your car for the high value than find the car that is already modified if that is what you want. It will be cheaper for you if you buy from someone that has already done the mods.

This is the key element. I've probably got more in mods than the car is currently worth, and it's yet to roll over 20k miles. I knew that was going to be the result, but I get to enjoy a true performance supercar for not a lot of total money.

I do change cars pretty frequently but the longest car I ever owned was my c6z (3 years) and I plan to keep this car for a long while.

Why'd you unload your C6Z?

Personally, I don't think a stock car pulls any more money than a modded car. It's all about the buyer. If you want some more pep in the step, a cammed car is a great way to go, esp if ECS is doing the work

When I was cam only back in 04, (02 Z06) I went from 363 rwhp to 430 rwhp, same dyno and shop so I know the gains were real. BTW, ECS did my cam back then, and I'm still using them 10 yrs later. now I have a cammed LS3 in the car with 500 rwhp and 469 rwtq stock heads. Use a reputable shop with proven results and a wide customer base like ECS.

what tires will be on the car?

i'm a huge fan of not overpowering cars.

if you use something like the toyo r888 on stock wheels i could see going to that 450-500whp mark.

would not touch a thing if you plan on staying on cruiser tires.

the ad08 and re11 seem to be good up to 430-440whp from what guys have said, probably better around 400whp

i'd just think it all over. i've had high hp cars before and hate them unless you happen to be on slicks. doing burnouts at 70mph isn't fast it's just a car that's hard to control and keep on a line if you try and drive it hard

I don't think cammed power is too much for street tires. My cammed Z has pilot sports on them with 305 rears and they don't break loose unless I stomp on it in first. I see what you're saying if you're in the 500rwhp and above club but for low 400s, street tires are fine.

OP, depending on what cam you pick, plan on making 400-430rwhp with bolt ons, untouched stock heads and a stock intake manifold/tb.

with good tires yes. the pss is a great tire that i'm sure would be fine at 400-420whp

i absolutely love that tire

also agree on 500whp and up which is where boost often heads.

a nice 220-230deg cam with ported heads and headers would be fun if you want a little more snap, also brings power on more in the top end where you won't be as traction challenged, and, love this part too, you get to stay on an organic clutch like the ls7 or monster 1

What's the most I can run on stock clutch ? I'm not opposed to doing a fast intake and tb while I'm at it. I'm really just torn do I keep it straight bolt on headers exhaust intake tune or do I dump more money into it and go to the next level

Power can be addictive, and like Racebum says, too much power is not productive with inadequate tires. I have Nitto Invos, and even though the rears are 325s, it's difficult to control. I also have a very, very heavy clutch pedal with a tiny engagement window. I would do my mods differently, if I had them to do again. There's no set number at which a new clutch becomes necessary. I was at 450 RWHP with the stock clutch, and then I added a ported FAST90 setup, and the first time I tried to shift at redline, the pedal stuck. I recommend a cam with a mild lope for a NA car. You can't beat the sound. (assuming headers)
