Exhaust Bypass Mod completed - 2012
Hey guys, there are many threads of having this mod completed but most are outdated by several years. Suppliers and welding shops change in periods like this so I thought I would supply all the info on what I had done recently.
2004 Z - exhaust bypass mod completed. My car has a Vararam and tune besides the bypass.
Before
After - unfortunately I did not take the weight afterwards
I started with purchasing a 2 ft x 2" piece of titanium piping along with 100 ft. of welding rod from http://www.titaniumjoe.com. The guy I talked to on the phone suggested the 2" piece over the 1.5" most guys use. I believe the pipe and rod shipped to me was around $125.
I live in Ocala, FL and called MANY welding shops in Orlando, Tampa, Ocala, and Gainesville before I found a few that said they could do it. I ended up using a place called Hahn Racecraft in Morriston, FL. They are out in the middle of nowhere.

They charged me $270 to weld the piping. They quoted me $90 per hour and thought it would take 2 hours. However, he had to shrink the piping down to fit on one side due to the diameter so it took longer. Perhaps a 1.5" pipe would have been better. The guy did a great job on the actual welding. His only complaint was my welding rod I supplied as a little thin. They would have preferred a thicker rod. It was really thin.
I had the exhaust removed at Modern Muffler in Ocala for $30. He only charged me $20 to put it back on.
As for the sound, it is definitely noticeably louder than stock when WOT. Driving around town it doesn't seem that much louder just normal accelerating but WOT it's very noticeable that it's louder. Cruising it doesn't seem much louder if any, which is nice for when you want it quiet. Idling I thought it was about the same until I parked next to my student at the last track day who had a bone stock '02 Z. Mine sounded like it was twice as loud. I couldn't hardly hear his. I also like how it pops when you let off during deacceleration. I'm anxious to get some longtubes and no cats because then I think it will really open it up and have exactly the sound I am looking for.
So at the end of the day I spent:
$130 pipe
$270 weld
$50 remove/install.
Total - $450.
Not the cheapest mod but the next option is a heavier exhaust such as GHL Bullets at $850. So I retained the weight and got some more sound.
Hope this helps.

I went to the track this weekend using the same setup I had before and the sound increase is definitely noticeable.

After

I love how it sounds when you're letting off now.
Car sounds much meaner IMO.

I read that in another post, it did not make sense to me either. maybe that person did not have cats. I think I was looking at your post actually? Can you PM me the shop (Trenton I think) and how much they charged you? Thanks

Jeremy, twin cars man, I got this done a few months back. I only needed to buy 1' from Titanium Joe... Not many guys can weld Titanium properly, but the mod was well worth it.
Mine burbles and backfires on deceleration... it's definitely louder stock idle and MUCH louder on throttle. I was in the same boat thinking that it didn't do much until I compared to stock, always nice to have a reference point

That video is a great selling point. Not really all that loud, but a lot more definition (*****) to the sound. And now we wait for the filler rod question. . .

Size doesn't really matter as long as you have enough. It would be cheaper if you find a welder that can do it and he had his own filler rods versus buying it. Titanium is not hard people just think it is. Have to keep it clean and under 800 deg plus a few other things that you can goggle and test your welder.
Otherwise this should work. http://www.titaniumjoe.com/index.cfm...cks:TIG%20wire

I'm going to make another video here soon. I've added longtubes and removed the cats. It's a lot louder now.
