Default Dyno Gains from 219/223 .607/.610 Cam - RESULTS!

Last week I had a cam package installed. Here are the details:

- 219/223 Comp cam
- Patriot Gold dual valve spring kit
- Comp's rocker arm trunion bearing upgrade kit
- C5R timing chain
- pinned crank
- ported stock oil pump

My previous mods include:
- Callaway CAI
- ported TB
- LG Street headers w/cats

This chart shows the torque curve comparison, pre- and post-cam. Peak torque went up by 13 ft-lbs, but I gained 19 ft-lbs at 3100 rpm, and 90% of peak torque is already reached by 2500 rpm. Notice I gained torque over the entire rpm range, which is exactly what I was going for. Although this chart only goes down to around 2400 rpm, based on feel I'm confident saying that gains continue all the way down to idle, so this is a perfect cam for a daily driver (which mine is).

This chart shows a detailed view of the torque and power gains. The average torque gain from 2400 - 6600 rpm is 15 ft-lbs, and the average power gain from 4600 - 6600 rpm (which represents the range for redline shifting) is 16 hp. And you can see there are significant torque gains below 3500 rpm.

And this is the final result with the cam. It makes 418 peak horsepower, which is an increase of 20 hp over the previous setup.

At idle, this setup has just a little more lope and shake than a stock LS6. I consider it a semi-sleeper cam, because it likely won't be detected by people other than those who are familiar with the LS engines. It also has greater valvetrain noise than stock, which is to be expected with the dual valve springs and .600"+ lift cam. Lastly, it should have no problems passing CA smog, which is pretty important to me.

A big thanks goes out to RPM Motors in Santa Clarita for the installation and tuning. The only future power mod I currently have planned is some head work, and I'll definitely be returning to RPM when the time comes.

Oh, and for those interested, my stock fuel injectors are right around 80% duty cycle with this power, which is about as high as you want them. I'll be upgrading them once I mess with the heads.

Great numbers! So your previous numbers were 398 to the wheels with only the following mods?
- Callaway CAI
- ported TB
- LG Street headers w/cats

Did the ported TB help much?

Yeah, details can be found here:

I'm guessing it added a few hp at higher rpm, but it's hard to say for sure without a controlled test.

Great results Mike, I am keeping track of your builds for when I go down that path with my 02 Z.

Awesome numbers for a small cam like that. That thing will pass the sniffer with ease

I know it's an older thread but seems we have the same taste. Red cars with stealthy cams.....no need to draw attention

Very Nice Numbers...lets see what that small eps cam does for mine.

Did you ever have a pre mod dyno pull and what were the results?

I posted a link to the pre-cam results in post #9. I bet you'll be happy with that EPS cam; they've been getting good results over on LS1tech. It'll be interesting to see how our results compare with each other. Your cam has more duration than mine, but a lower LSA, so it should have a similar power band.

Good numbers, although a little pricey for just 20hp, in my opinion.

I have an EPS cam ready to go into the Z come thanksgiving. 226/230 .598/.609 111+2 , I'm hoping to hit around 425. Previously put down 375. Not cheap to add power to NA cars.

Your 375 number - is that with intake and headers, but no tune? If so, you'll definitely see bigger gains than me, since I had a good tune before the cam was added. And your goal should be within reach. If you're already tuned at 375 though, I suspect it will be a challenge to add 50 rwhp with just a medium sized cam on stock heads (assuming same tuner and dyno).

I need to dyno where you did

Around here, bolt-on cars don't dyno 400rwhp

I'm H/C/I (PRC 2.5 5.3|230/234 111 615/615|FAST 102) with a ported 90mm TB, Halltech, and Kooks and only laid down 424/382 in August in Phoenix on 91. Under ideal circumstances (less heat), I really don't see this gaining more than 20 on each, so 440/400 seems about right, which still seems low by comparison

^ Comparing #'s from different dynos really doesn't do a whole lot of good. The major takeaway from this thread should be those first two images I loaded at the top. They show the gains I got from a small cam, using the same dyno/tuner before and after.
