Check this thread out. http://warnerrobert.com/ubb/ultimat...ic&f=1&t=001411

With 390 hp, plus easy mods like a pulley swap, computer chip and long tube headers, that the Lightning guys have already developed, these things will be 450hp easy!! Hope GM comes through with their promised hp increase. Its bad enough to get beat by a Viper, but to get beat by a Cobra that costs 10-15K less, is just embarrassing.

Ford was just waiting for the right time it seems...heck, Ford was able to put the Camaro and Firebird out to pasture without ever beating them on the track. :yesnod:

bad link.

And it's still a mustang. ;-)

:U

Though also isn't the Cobra supposed to be blown? If so I would be really surprised if the mustang was 35k or under... but we'll see.

The '03 Cobra will make great power but I don't think it will hang with the Z stock. Its about 400 lbs heavier, esp. in the front with the cast iron block, supercharger, and intercooler. With minor mods, I'm sure they'll be competitve in the straight line but I don't think they will be able to take the Z at the track.

I think it's great it's getting more power. Hey it's a muscle car, it's supposed to haul butt in a straight line. The Cobra is also pretty decent through the corners now. But the Z06 is a SPORTS car, and is in a totally different arena. I'm not complaining though, any percieved competition only ups the incentive to knock the Z up another notch!

Ford is smart. Now that the F-bodies are going away, this is the perfect time to come out with a hi-hp flagship.

Remember, Saleen, Steeda and other comapnies have Mustang based cars that can run with the C5's.

Plus, like mentioned above, it's still a Mustang. BTW- the lease on my 99 Z28 is due this May, I might look into the Cobra :reddevil

I hate to play this card, but it's the truth.

It wouldn't be embarrassing because it's still just a Mustang. It's not in the same league as a Vette.

:rolleyes:Hey guys. You are missing the point.

The only reason I have a Z06 is because of the Cobra R. GM would never have stepped out there unless they were forced to.

I hope they make the 03 Cobra with 500 hp that will pull 1.1G on the pad. Then Chevrolet will step up to the plate again.

By the way, I traded my 00 Lightning on my first Z06.

I agree with you that corvette has a much more prestigious reputation then the cobra, but I submit to you that that is because the corvette has always been faster and more powerful. The first time that a "cobra" beats a "corvette" and the vette owner says that "well, its only a cobra and I own a vette," people will just laugh and say "you fool." With that being said, I am sure that GM will step up to the plate and build a faster Z06, otherwise, quite frankly, I think I may be going with a cobra and pocketing the other $15k!!

Exactly. I've heard the same argument after completely PASTING a stock Viper or Z06 by 350' in the 1/4 mile. It's the same excuse the lame ricers use. Excuses are just that. Get over it.

However, in the opinion of this "Mustang guy" (who is also the proud owner of a Z06), Ford isn't trying to compete with the Vette. They are just building a faster Cobra and it will sell, b/c if it runs 110+ in the 1/4 then its a good deal at $35k. It's not a Corvette. It wasn't designed to be. When/if Ford builds the GT-40 (2-seat "Sports Car") then I'll believe Ford is aiming directly at the Vette/Viper.

Right now the Mustang has no "class warfare" to contend with. So give Ford some props for at least making an effort to improve the car, even with no real competition in its class.

Other facts, as some have already stated: The car is heavy, period. 3500+lbs empty. Yikes! A worse front/rear weight bias than the current Cobra (due to the iron block, blower and T56 trans). These things will hurt stopping performance and handling for sure.

I agree with 67restomod in that owners will quickly hit the aftermarket for some more aggressive tuning, air intake mods, and pulley swaps and it will be a neat car that is pretty darn fast.

But stock for stock, it will stand no chance against a stock Z06. For the last time...that's NOT the reason Ford is building it! :)

I totally disagree (respectfully, of course). Let's take the Cobra to the track (the kind with TURNS) and see how is fares against a C5. It won't be pretty, I can promise you that. The Corvette is NOT more respected simply because it's always "been faster". It has of course, but it's also always competed on a world class level in handling, braking, acceleration, etc; and there's more to a car than numbers. The heritage behind the car is a lot greater I believe, and also you must consider the driving experience (the experience is way greater than the sum of it's numbers). That's what's made the Vette such an automotive icon in the first place. So I'll stick with my "it's only a mustang" argument, and I think I'm right. So whether the new Cobra beats me (and that's a BIG *if*) in the Vette or the F355, I couldn't care less. Both of them offer WAY, WAY more than the Cobra in more areas than they might be lacking (and that's not even for sure yet).

:yesnod:

Well first I should say I own a Coupe, not a Z06. Secondly, I am not a some die-hard Chevy guy. I bought a 98 Z28 new(my first GM car) for one simple reason - LS1. I may be in the minority here, but 390 HP for under $40G's sounds pretty frickin good to me - I don't care who's namepate is on it. Would I trade my C5 for it? Nah....

WA 2 FST,
100% agreement..........
A MUSTANG is NOT, never has been, never will be a VETTE..............
Two separate cars, filling two separate niches...........
With the "F", bods gone for a while........the Stang's will sell like hot CAKES........
Kudo's to FOMOCO, they could have sat on their duff's, and done nada, and they would have sold their share......
But, in agreement with WA 2 FST...........this is not a Vette v.s. Cobra anything..........to make these comparo's is a waste of time............

The way i look at it is this. The first Ford dork to get one of these faster cobra's can call me. We can meet at any local road course and settle it. But remember bring cash because i do not accept checks!
