Need input on drivetrain noise
Have a 2000 C5 @ 28,000 miles, no abuse
The noise sounds like the kind you would get with an older car when you have a worn U joint.
Just when starting out - there is a slight clunk before the drivetrain fully engages.
Chevy dealer changes the rear fluid (plus additive) which took it away for a while, but now it's back.
He also talked about replacing the rear half shafts at $600/side, but no gaurentee that that would solve the problem.
Any ideas?

28K on the clock is nothing. The CV type boots aren't torn? Are you getting a loss of rear end gear oil from one of the seals? You stated a "clunk" type sound which does sound like the half-shafts, which by the way are a lot cheaper that $600 per side, although I'm not talking about labor, rather parts only. If you were hearing a click type sound then there is an easy fix for that. Have you checked the torque on the axle shaft nuts (33mm)?
