Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06?
Just wondering if you miss the top down or does the increased performance out weigh the disadvantage? I'm really on the fence about this one :yesnod: Part of me says " Be a real man and get a Z06" the other part says.." screw the performance and that sweet gear box and cruise in style!"

I went from a 95 Vert to an 02 Z06. No problem for me. Too windy for a Vert at 135 mph and above. Seriously, a totally different experience. The power more than makes up for the open air. My 95 was a stick and the Z06 behaves like a LT1 under 2500 RPM

I went from a '01 Ragtop to a '02 Z.
I'd do it again in a HEARTBEAT! The Z is UNBELIEVABLE. Go and buy it now. You will NOT regret the trade. The Z is at another level of quality over the Standard C5. I'm sorry if that might sound conceited but you will understand after you've driven a Z for a couple of days. :seeya

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (Mag Red Monster)
I went from a '99 6 speed convertible to the Z06. The convertible was mod'd and so was pretty decent performance but felt like a land-barge in comparison to the Z06.
I think that you are either tend to be a roofless person or not. There's something really great about cruising in the summer (any sunny day) with the roof off - sort of joy of living thing that you can't get with a fixed roof. If you enjoy this, then you'll always be hankering for a topless car of some type. I know that I HAVE to have a convertible of some type (or targa).
By comparison though, the performance of the Z06 is captivating and I've got to say, the car is a beast. :D :D :D
So, difficult decision. I'm lucky in so far as I have a another convertible and so the decision wasn't that difficult. If you REALLY, REALLY wanted it, there are also topless conversions out there for the Z06 too.

I curently own a '01 MY/Blk Vert and'02 EB/Mod Red Z06. If you lived in a warm climate you would really be on the fence (THATS WHY I NOW OWN BOTH). I would go for the Z in the northern climates....JMO..Fubu/Les

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (Mag Red Monster)
In September I traded my 00 vert for an 01 Z06. The decision was tough and I was beginning to have buyers remorse while I was waiting for the dealership to finish the paper work. Then I drove it home - wow! I haven't looked back. I can't believe the difference, the z06 is twice as much fun to drive. The only two things I miss are the HUD and the CD changer.
Besides, if I ever get the bug for a convertible again, I can pick up an older one. The convertible wasn't that great for road trips anyway. An older vert for around town and the z06 for the road!

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (z06fun)
I had a '98 vert. for a long time and then I went for a ride in an '02 Z06 that belongs to Frisky on the forum, that got my interest up and then another fine member sent me some red Z06 fuel rail covers, well that did it !
I had the Z06 bug, so I went and drove a couple and knew it was the only way to go.
I sold the '98 to a good friend and see it every day and never want to go back.
I loved the vert. but it just can't come close to the Z06 in any way. :yesnod:

I guess I'm going to be the sole dissenting opinion here.
I went from a '98 Convertible to an '01 Z06. It was a great car, but I REALLY missed the 'top down' feeling. Part of the problem is that here in Phoenix we have something like 350 days of sun per year, and being in the closed FRC body style really hurt once in a while.
But I did love the performance of the Z06. When they started talking about 405HP for 2002, and then I started hearing about the Electron Blue (my '98 was Nassau Blue, and I missed that too), I knew I had to have one.
However I decided that I really wanted the convertible as well, so I took delivery of my '02 in October, and shipped it up to Caravaggio about 2 weeks later to have it made into a convertible.
So you can have the best of both worlds. :yesnod:

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (jonstr)
I agree with johnstr and I, too, miss the top down feeling. The performance on the ZO6 is great and it is a true road warrior. The negative with a Vert is that there is also a consideration for safety as your hp grows and your fear of rolling the thing increases. Then there is the pesky requirements of a cage at the track that kind of booted me towards the ZO6. But, for a street beast, a ZO6 vert is tough to beat.

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (Mag Red Monster)
I did. Do I miss the vert ? Yes. Is the vert the prettiest of the three - with the top down it is the most beautiful car in the line-up. Do I get a grin on my face every time I drive the Z06 - Yes. Did I get a grin on my face every time I drove the convertible - no. The performance of the Z06 makes the car really, really fun to drive. The convertible eventually becomes a daily, civilized driver.
All you have to do is take each of the cars out for a drive. Goose 'em, then decide. Its either that or Caravaggio ..............
Up here in the rainy Northwest either car is trying on one's patience. Too much rain - either car begs for dry weather of which we have so little. When we do, we love it - just like the last three days of beautiful sun !

Went from a '99 vert. to the '02 ZO6. There is no comparison in the size
of the grin on your face when you accelerate. The vert. was my 4th vette and
first convertable. I had it for 2 1/2 years and only had the top down 4 times.
I guess I was not a convertable guy. I have to wear a hat to put the top down.
I bought it because of the trunk, keeps my golf clubs out of the sun and more
secure. The fixed top with a trunk was what I really needed anyway, and 405h.p. doesn't hurt. :)

What Jonstr said... a Z06 vert is the best of both worlds.
Here in Central Florida, we have a LOT of top down days, so the climate where you live could and should have some bearing on your decision. We really enjoy driving topless and had the roof off our GS coupe every chance we could, as well. I don't think there is a prettier Corvette than a convertible with the top down, either.
Having said all that, however, if it was a choice between either a C5 convertible or a Z06... and I could only have one or the other... I'd go for the Z06. It's an awesome car that you shouldn't pass up owning if you have the chance. If you still end up longing for that top-down feeling, Mr. Caravaggio will be there waiting for you. :)

Re: Who has gone from a Convertible to the Z06? (Mag Red Monster)
I have to admit I miss my 99 Dark Navy on Oak, with Mag wheels Vert. Probabley the biggest reason is all the bad press the 01 Zo6 is getting for oil consumption. I am on a list for a 03 Zo6 but the resale on this 01 is really in the dumper. I probabley would have done better keeping the Vert.I like the performance of the Zo6 and I hope the 03 is a truly refined C5 like the 67 were to the mid year era. .......Regards Gerry
