'01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide
OK, I've lurked around here enough, I reckon.
Got to have one of these cars but I need to know the straight skinny on the REAL difference between the 01 and 02 versions from someone who can honestly and fairly compare the two. I can read the specs. I want to know what the differences are like behind the wheel.
Obviously, there are some great deals on barely used 01's out there right now. The price delta is much more than it would take in aftermarket items to boost past the 02's 405 HP mark. Its hard for me to justify an $8K or so difference between a new 02 and and an 01 with less than 1K miles on it.
Wish I could have got in on that 0% financing deal and all this would have been a moot point, but it wasn't meant to be. Very soon I'll be ready for one, though. Color doesn't really matter as it will likely be redone anyway.
I've heard that its like night and day between the two cars but I have a hard time believing that. So... convince me!

Why would you want to redo the color and what color would you paint it?

gs, tell me how 15/17 rwhp is worth 8k?????????
Especially if you are going to change it.......
Get an '01, and spend the 8k, and have a rwhp of OVER 420HP..............
If you were leave it stock, I'd go with the '02........
Otherwise forget it. :D

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (dbvettez06)
I'm one of the few on the Forum that have owned both a 01 and 02 Z06. The differences are relatively minor, you have to be a real "driver" to appreciate the improvements. There's no question that the 02 is slightly faster straight line but a good driver in a 01 will more than make up the difference over an average driver in the 02 in the 1/4 mile. The difference in handling is more noticable. The back end of the 02 sticks better in curves, especially when it's bumpy. The HUD is great.
With that said 8K will buy a lot of go-fast mods. If I were in your shoes I'd probably go for the 01.

Ah, just the kind of informed reply I was looking for, Jerry. Many thanks. I will definitely keep all that in mind. I'd miss the HUD on the 01, but $8K would go a long way towards soothing my displeasure. :)
Thanks!

Jerry is right - the differences are not vast or substantial.
Check the history on the car and the TSB's on the brake booster issue, steering column lock and get someone to drive behind you to see if the car blows smoke. More than likely the car will be fine without any of these issues.

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (gs633)
Being in your shoes about a month ago, maybe I can add some advice as well.
I decided to buy the 01 Z06. And saved some $$$$. Credit Unions have some great rates on used cars also at this time. So, I say go for the 01, take your time and make a good pick for a slightly used 01. I don't think you will have to spend much cash in simple bolt-ons to gain some serious Horse Power.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Its very much appreciated.
Speaking of bolt-ons and given my theoretical $2K initial budget, what would you suggest? I assume intake and exhaust, to start. Which ones? Anything else?

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (gs633)
Hello gs33
I also was faced with the choice and got the 01. Saved almost 10K
As for mods IMO:
1) Air Intake - $400.00
2) Shifter & Shift **** - $250.00
3) Exhaust - $1300.00 - I plan on installing the 02 exhaust from manifold to existing mufflers. It will remain stock looking and pass emmissions
Right at about 2 grand :D

If you're going for the GS look, I have an Electron Blue/mod red Z06 that will be in this week! Just needs the stripe and some hash marks!!

Rollin -- thanks for the tips. Why replace the shifter? What did you replace it with? I have a KW Racing short shifter in my GS which I like. And which air intake do you guys recommend? Seems to be a plethora (love that word!) of 'em out there.
Monica -- While I do like the new EB color, I'm afraid it just doesn't compare with the depth of good ol' Admiral Blue (IMHO, of course). Besides, I have this thing about factory orange peel. :D

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (gs633)
I HAVE BOTH AND IF THE 405 HP IS THE DRIVER, JUST ADD A HALTECH COLD AIR PACKAGE, HEADERS AND YOU WILL GET 405 HP OUT OF THE 2001. THE 2002 GIVES YOU A LITTLE BETTER RIDING CAR WITH 405 HP STOCK AND A HEADS UP DISPLAY, WHICH I PREFER......OTHER THAN THAT THEY ARE THE SAME CAR WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD OR ON THE STRIP.........BOTH ARE THE GREATEST CARS BUILT.

Thanks, Ted. Yeh, I'd miss the HUD but could deal with it for an $8K delta. Seems like its easy to get another 20-30 HP out of these motors just with minor intake and exhaust mods. That's nice to know. :yesnod:

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (gs633)
the 01 has a good possiblity to be a oil user, buyer beware i had to dump mine, however it is getting fixed before the nexed guy gets stuck with it,my suggestion on an 01 would to take the car for a long hard test run then inspect the rear facia and tail pipes closely for oil saturation.another option is at this point if you wait about 6 months you can be in a 03 model maybe somthing to think about, could be 425 horse by then (YAHOO),good luck to ya!! :flag

Neal -- 500 Miles! Outstanding! Now we're ready for that test drive!!! Yahoo! I'll be good, I promise! :blueangel: But we better do this BEFORE the party Sat nite.
Yep, you're absolutely right about the mods and no question, if money were no object, I'd have a twin to your EB 02 right now. But it is and I don't so there. :)
Actually, I'm going to take off work tomorrow afternoon to go look at a very promising '01 over in the Bay area. I'll check it out just for grins, but ya never know.
Trypower -- Odd thing about the 01's and oil consumption. Some have it, some don't. But I'll take your advice and check very carefully before pulling out my checkbook. Anything else I should look for/be wary of?

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (gs633)
Hi GS,
As you consider the $8k delta in price have you factored in the 2002 at 0% financing (GM now offers it until Jan 02, 2002) when compared to a used 2001 through the credit union which you mentioned? The finance charges may cancel out your $8k delta rather quickly. Thus, unless you are paying cash, you are better off to go with a 2002. My biggest justification for buying my 2002 over a 2001 was the oil consumption problem. Even if you buy one with the factory fix I would still have concerns about the motor being rebuilt by the local Chevy dealer. The zero % financing, smoother ride, HUD, no oil consumption issue and 405 hp bragging rights make the 2001 a tough choice in my book.

Rick Bailey http://www.opentracking.com

"GM now offers it until Jan 02, 2002"
Maybe you haven't been reading the posts. GM did NOT include the Corvette for the extended to Jan 2002 0% financing.

Re: '01 vs '02 Z06 - Help me decide (speedy-gonzalez)
I said that becasue that would be kinda funny, painting a car that didn't come that color... a GS is Blue, a Z06 is not....
You might not care for my color choice and I might not care for yours, but that's all OK. One reason I like the Corvette is because of its uniqueness. I'd just like it to be a bit more so. Besides, if you are that concerned about originality, why are your retrofitting 2002 parts on your 2001?
I think something like this would be awesome, especially when parked next to my GS, but I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep worrying that YOU might not care for it.
