just cut the fact. air box lid?
If I just cut a square hole in the top of the factory air box lid, will it hurt anything?
Was thinking this would be an inexpensive way to gain some air before I get a CAI of some sort.
I saw a modified lid in Eckler's catalog that was just a cut-out square on top.

I cut my original cover..regret it now because I don't have a stock one to put on if I ever need it. Covers are plentiful, however, so it wouldn't be too much of a problem.
I ultimately went with an aftermarket air intake. I think I would have probably gone to a K&N filter with the zip tie method, then onto the one that I now have. This leaves the stock one intact.
Search some threads on the zip-tie; it is cheaper and easier than cutting.

Went to a Vortex Rammer and got the kick in the pants I was looking for.

I cut (2) 4" squares in the lid and left the middle section in tact to maintain the rigidity. Shortened the metal bands and installed a K&N filter. You may want to consider whether or not to install weatherstriping under the front of the hood to avoid getting rain sucked in to the openings that you cut. Don't know if it would be a problem or not, just a thought.
BTW, I did not see a significant difference in performance, but I am not a real aggressive driver and I understand that the performance gains created by increased air flow would be more significant higher in the power band.

I cut out the center of my stock airbox, using the reinforcing ribs for the strap tiedowns as a reference as to how far to go; I'd guess it was about a 5x8 inch cutout.
Went to a dyno day and my otherwise stock LS-1 dynoed 9 rwhp higher than a completely stock C5 and right with another that had all the intake doo-dads.
So, you should have no problems at all.
HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

I bought a lid from a Forum member, cut it out as shown and still have the stock lid. Since the photo was taken, I have installed the Performance Hood Seal since from just washing the car, the element got wet.

Maybe the mods cause the engine to lean out the fuel mixture and maybe that causes the ping. If you richen the fuel mixture after the air filter mod you would have more power and no ping. Just my opinion. Jimmy
