Default Reverse lights on a 6 speed N/W... (Not Working)

The "rear" white lights work fine when setting the alarm/proximity/Panic switch... But when putting the car on REVERSE they do NOT illuminate... Have read about a reverse switch on the tranny on the pax side that goes bad... I guess that my 98 vert's has gone bad...

Anyone has a part number? I hope that replacing it will fix the problem...

Thanks a lot all!

Default Beep Beep, reality check

Sounds good and all..but did anyone check the Fuse
I had the same problem no b/u lites but flashed with the alarm.
i read the same stuff and bought the switch and changed it when i serviced the tranny fluid.
Still didn't work! I had this dumbfounded look on my face when i realized it was the fuse!
I had just figured it was broke when the stupid valets in vegas messed up my parking brake too!
RTFM, and CTFF! ahhh..words to the wise

This a VERY common problem on a 6 spd. Chances are, the reverse light switch located on the passenger side of the trans needs replacing.....yes, even if you have a low miles car. really easy fix and only about 12 dollars.

It can NOT be the fuse! If the lights work when the approach lights are on the fuse is GOOD. The switch on the trans is BAD!

Easy fix!

Keep in mind the fuse is usually a common secondary effect of the backup lamp switch failing. When my switch went, it shorted blew the fuse. I verified this before replacing the switch. So bottom line, most of the time both the switch and the fuse needs to be replaced.

The Approach Lamp feature uses a separate circuit so it is not affected by the blown fuse/switch.

See my post above. The two are on separate circuits.

I think someone else already chimed in, but Bill, these are two separate circuits. What usually happens is:

Reverse switch goes bad in the trans, but when it fails it shorts the circuit, which also blows the associated fuse.

So first replace the trans switch, then
replace the fuse, and wallah, problem solved. Worked for me.

And for those that have the auto-dimming mirrors, when the reverse switch goes bad, which then normally blows the fuse, your auto-mirror won't work anymore (and neither will the little orange light under the mirror). There is a feature that cuts power to the dimming mode of the mirror when you put the car in reverse, so when the fuse blows from the shorted reverse switch, it causes the mirror to stop working.

The repair is so easy on this. You can't miss the reverse switch part, which is located on the side of the tranny. Its on the passenger side of the manual transmission. Takes about 4 minutes for the R/R of the reverse switch. Jack up the rear or use Rhino Ramps to gain access.
