A4 running 315 x 30 x 18 BFG DRs at the track
I have a 2000 A4 with the stock T converter, numerous addons and a 3.42
rear running 12.8s at the track. I just purchased a set of the 315x30x18
BFG drag radials and mounted them on 10.5 inch rims and ran at the track
last weekend. The tires did not seem to make any difference in ET or 60'
times. I started at 26 lbs and whet down as low as 18 lbs. The lowest 60'
time was a 1.94 at 26 lbs and I have done that good on my old Z06 GY
F1 tires. Is there any trick to using DRs on an A4 ? Also with just addons
what shift points should I be using at the track ? I shift now at 6100 rpm.
Any ideas ?

Almost the same set up.SS3600, 3.42, and bolt ons. Using 295/35/18 with 10.5x18 rims. Hook good on the street with just a clean off spin. At the track 1.9362 best 60 foot. They seem to pick up rubber off the track gum up and spin. varied pressure 25 down to 18. I tried four passes and quit .

Re: A4 running 315 x 30 x 18 BFG DRs at the track (INTHERED)
I have the 295/35's and similar mods to you, all the bolt ons but stock internals with stock gears and TC.
With your set up, you're probably in the same situation i am.
A 1.9xx 60' is about as good as your going to do, so it comes down to track prep, weather, ect. I've actually gotten slower times running my DR's versus my street tires, but other days i can get NO traction with street tires and my BFG's will still hook 1.9xx.
Next time start at 30 psi, thats usually where i run mine. :steering:

Stock converter won't cut it for sticky tires. Period. Get a bigger stall and take advantage of those BFGs.

Re: A4 running 315 x 30 x 18 BFG DRs at the track (FASTENUF)
Actually guys, with the stock converter, this is about as good as it is going to get (1.9x 60'). Once you change the converter to anything over 3200, you should easily see your 60' drop by at least 2/10th with DR's.
Actually I have cut a best of 1.766 w/ 295/35/18 BFG g-force's @ 30psi on stock 2002 rims (not DR's) and a 1.590 with ET Streets using a SS3600 converter with 3.42's. This is primarily due to the converter, as well as the loads of torque the car has off the line.

INTHERED,
If you were spinning your BFG DR during launch, you need to invest in a line-lock and heat the tires before each run.
I noticed that with the line lock, my 60’ times are very consistent. Without it, doing a burnout while holding the car with the brakes, the results were mixed. With my current modes and a burnout with the line lock, I have the tires at 25psi with minimal or no spin during launch.
Stock rubber:
Best 60’: 1.915 – Average: 2.054 on 465 runs (Stock + some power modes)
335/30-18 Pilot Sports:
Best 60’: 1.820 – Average 2.056 on 102 runs (More power modes)
295/35-18 BFG DR:
Best 60’: 1.739 – Average 2.073 on 14 runs (No other power modes, No Line lock)
295/35-18 BFG DR:
Best 60’: 1.638 – Average 1.709 on 23 runs (No other power modes + Line lock)

A good torque converter would help.

Re: A4 running 315 x 30 x 18 BFG DRs at the track (INTHERED)
i saw the "Bandit" get consistently 1.6 60fts with 295 BFGs and occasionally 1.5, but like said above he has a TC ...

Gotta agree on the TC........My Y2K with a stock 3.15, stock TC and bolt ons has done a 1.91 60' on Nitto 555 street tires to a 12.47 @112.
Have yet to run it with DRs but I think another .05 off the 60 is possible.
Track prep is key as well :yesnod:
Get a good TC and watch the 60's fall.............
Now my 97', no problem cutting 1.52's with DRs but that has a little more power.

Thanks for the all info. A line lock sounds like the way to go.
Who makes a good one ? How hard is it to install ? When not
in use does it interfere with the ABS ?

line lock????? that is not going to help your 60 ft
i have over 300 passes on my zo6 with no line lock !!! 1.4 60fts
get yourself a nice converter thats what you need !!!

The addition of a torque converter does it change drivability on the street ?
Do I need to beef up the drivetrain to handle a new TC ? What rpm stall
would be good for a daily driver with occasional track use ? How difficult
is it to install ?

I would agree as well that with your converter you probably will not be seeing better 60's

However very many people here have made a compelling argument for a stalll speed of at least 3000 and maybe even 3500 stall. A little less, to a lot less drivability, depending on gears the converters STR, and the drivers personal tastes, etc. but pays big dividends from a stop or a rolll.
Some think 2800 is a happy medium. And they too, state a good case.
Torque converters are not easy to install. I know its water under the bridge, but what you are seeing now, is one of the chief reasons why I am electing to do both the torque converter and gears at the same time.
But a good stall converter is practically crucial if you want the best results you can get.

It depends in part on how aggressive a TC you get, your personal tastes, and how you drive. I am going with the Pro torque 2400. Hits off the line very well, and barely affects drivability. After looking at them all and speaking with Joe, Jr at Pro Torque, its all I need. It does not offer much from a roll however.

I have a stock TC and 3.15 rear. My best 60 foot is 1.92 on drag radials. This is about the best you can do with the stock TC.
