I'm a relative newbie, so I'm sure this topic is buried somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look.

Anyway, I bought a Corvette "coffe table" book the other day that I think was published in Great Britain. It says the C5's top end is 187! Another book I ve says 172 or something. Who to believe?

Is there any definitave, accurate data on this? Also, do performance mods had a big effect on top end, or just the ability to get there quicker?

From what I have read, the top end for a coupe is is around 172 (The fastest of all c5s) drag limited. I think the vert is somewhere around 168, and not too sure about the Z.

Top end for a coupe is about 183. Do a search here and you will find a few people and even a few videos of those who have done it.

I was under the impression it was 176 for the coupe. I can say for certain 167 at least, and there was plenty left on my '98 :crazy:

There's only one way to find out how fast your vette is.
Find a nice stretch of highway and hold down the gas pedal!

If you're not willing to find out, what do you care how fast it is? :steering:

I think there are 2 different factory rear-end gear ratios. Is that right? I think my Z06 is 3:42. What does a coupe, vert, and FRC come with? That would make a difference. :cheers:

All 6 speeds and z06s come with only one option from the factory-3.42 gears. A4s have either a 2.73 (dog) gear or a perf. 3.15 axle. You would think you could at least get a 3.42 in a A4 from GM but no dice!!! :confused:

I haven't done gps on my Vette but Ive seen 186 mph on the hud. Completely legal on the autobahn here in Germany. I was running stock emts and 3.42 gears plus the mods in my signature. I have no reason to believe my speedometer is inaccurate. Except for regular inaccuraces in production gauges. Run was done with a 145 mph start into a 1 1/2 mile long straight. :cheers:

Top speed of my MN6 Coupe is 300 - 301 km/h on the speedometer, which is 187 mph. :steering:

I have had mine up to 145 and that was fast enough me, so I let up...be carefull.

I've had mine over 180mph, with ALOT left to go...however I'm not exactly stock either. :smash: :cheers:

Couldn't help but notice that the Trans Fluid temp was going up pretty fast as tthe car approached that 300 kph mark. At what point is it actually considered high ? Don't know my metric conversion and my 98 didn't have that feature. :cry PS loved the video clip :jester

Top speed on any vehicle is limited by HP and highest RPM the engine will acheive at RPM cut out. The HP part comes into play in the cars ability to over come the wind resistance (areodynamics) The more HP you put in the factor the more wind resistance you can over come. If you have 320 rear wheel HP it is going to take you a while to get to top end. If you have 400 RWHP the same speed comes up real fast then you reach the engine top end! If you raise the RPM cut off 500 RPM, your going to have a LOT higher top end speed than your C5 brother/sister with a stock C5.

If you have a higher numerical rear end ratio it will lower your topend speed. You may not be able to go as fast but you will get to the top end a LOT faster!! :steering: :D :thumbs:
So,,,, it is hard to say how fast you can go! Sounds like the average stock speed is around 175-178 I have seen some post on this forum that claim 200+ on a heavily modified car! :steering: :steering: :thumbs: :chevy
There is also the testerone and common sense factor. I have only been to about 155 then the testerone ran out and the common sence factor took over. All I could see was the hand cuffs, jail door slamming shut, the $100 dollar bills flying out my wallet along with my drivers liciense!:eek:

I am trying to view Indyblue's 187mph video and my computer running WinXP is quacking about a codec error. It attempts to download the codec, goes through the motions, then gives me audio only. Any suggestions?

Isn't it amazing how the testosterone or "*****" factor changes with age. When I was 20, I would have gone flat out and never thought twice about it. Now at 55, I can feel my nutz as they suck up into my throat.

WOW. :thumbs: Max I got to was 270 kph. Ran out of road :lol: . We don't have many straights here . Will try again with plates off ;)
