Harden output shafts
Has anybody installed harden output shafts themselves or is it something that would be more difficult and whats a good brand to go with? Thanks for the help.

Re: Harden output shafts (C5XP)
Big job IMO. I have the LPE shaft and had ARE do it. Ya have to rip apart the diff to put it in from what I understand. Not a job for me without a lift and proper tools and shop.

Output shafts are pretty simple. Jack the car up, pull the rear. Remove the side cover and remove the diff. The ring gear comes off next. The 8-10 bolts will split the differential. Remove the C clip and insert the new shaft.

Phil, I just got finished swapping rears (and tranny and engine) in my car last week. When I was putting the driver's side driveshaft back in, the boot (inside CV boot) wouldn't go all the way against the differential. Any idea what would cause that and how to correct it. I tried and tried and it just would not go. In fact, I was afraid I was going to break something I was using so much force trying to pop that sucker on there. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Frank

Frank,
It should slide in and click into position. There is prolly ~1/4" of space between the case and the axle.

Easy for you to say. With my mechanical knowledge, I'll leave it to the pros. :D

Phil, the passenger side goes right against the housing, but the driver's side has at least 1/2". The shop manual states that it should go all the way against the housing. I'm concerned about trash getting in and oil getting out. I don't know what to do at this point.

Re: Harden output shafts (QwikSilvr)
Like Phil said, it is rather simple, and once you have done it once, it gets easier. If you are putting down some HP, and are going to be breaking these shafts, you may as well learn to do it yourself! I broke 2 last year, but have had good luck with the current LPE shaft I have in the car now, and that is with slicks and 1.4x 60' ft times.
Also, Qwiksilver, try pulling the axle back out and turn it a little bit, maybe put a little oil on it, I have had a few that stick like that, it will go in, you may just have to play with it, make sure the control arm is jacked up evenly with the diff. so there is not a wierd angle on it too!

Re: Harden output shafts (kwik8racr)
I had the same problem with my half shaft not going all the way in.....
Turned out when I removed the old differentila and pulled out the half shaft, the side cover seal from the old differential was still on there.
You may want to see if an old seal is still on the halfshaft. That would prevent it from going all the way. Normally it is real simple to get them back in!
