SS3600 & 3.73 ??????
Hello
I am thinking of going with the SS3600 with 3.73 gears or 3.42. I want to know if this is an ok setup for a daily driver in traffic. If not is there a better one I should be looking at. I go to the track about 15 times a year and take about 1-2 road trips a years. I am not to concern with the loss of top speed, (but just curious to what the top speed is with the 3.73 gears?????)
Thanks in advance.

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (VICOUS)
I am currently running the SS3600 and 3.42's. Overall the combination works well though I would have to say from time to time the shift points for the converter to lock in day to day driving as well as the additional RPMs needed to get moving from a light tend to make the car a little annoying as hte car is so loud with the Borla Stingers and LGM G5X2 Cam and Longtubes. I wish Yank had a SS3200 available. If I had to do over again. I think I would probably go with the Vig 2800 or 3200 and 3.42's or the SS3600 and 3.73's.
For now the stock transmission seems to be slipping a bit with all of the newly added power (425rwhp) so I will be looking to replace it with an FLP Level IV tranny in the next couple of months. At that time I may try to see if yank can build be a custom SS3200?? and go with that. But regardless of which way you go.. if you stay with the SS3600.. it will be a lot of fun.
I just took the car back over to the dealership I purchased it from last summer to give the sales guy there a ride as he has been dying to see the car ever driving it down to LGM in May. Most of the sales staff came out when they heard the car start up. When we got back, none of them could believe the car was an automatic. With this setup and the stock runcraps, I was able to boil the tires through 1st, most of 2nd, and a little again when shifting into 3rd. On a second pass by them, I started out from a 30mph roll to allow the car to hook up a bit. Once the car down shifted and the converted flashed up and hooked, the car shot off like a bat out of hell. At this point I had a couple of the sales guys wanting to try and line up a Z06 against me to see how much it would pull them from a roll.
Now all I need is a new tranny and set of tires that can hold the power the converter tries to put to the rear end. If I can get the car to hook with a good set of tires I will be staying with the 3600 and just get a quieter exhaust. This should be especially fun with the new goodiwes coming out over the next few months .... AFR Heads, FAST Intake Manifold, and G5X-3 or G5X-4 . :reddevil

I ran the ST3500(which is about the same as the SS3600) with 3.73 gears. The 3.73s greatly reduced the looseness you are talking about, and gave great driveabilty around town. My car is at 2350 RPM at 70 MPH with my 3.73s. Unless you do a whole lot of highway driving I would go for the 3.73s.

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (wallstAL)
I have the SS3600 and 3.42's. It is a great Daily Driver TC and much tighter than the combo of 3.42's and a SY3500, which I have experienced myself on several cars. Shift Points for daily driving are fine and a lot of that is getting your car tuned correctly which mine is. It hits hard from a stop, does great from a roll, and feels very tight and is very efficient. I got used to it after 5 minutes and right then I knew I should have went a bit bigger, especialy with the High STR of 2.5, which you already know makes it feel tight around town as compared to a lower STR Converter.
I only went to the track twice since I had it, but pulled a 1.73 60' my 1st time at teh 1/8 mile track with BFG Dr's (it wasn't tuned right at that time) and most recentlyI ran a 12.19 at 113 MPH several weeks ago in Ennis in 90 degree heat and that was with a 1.86 60'. I have no heads or headers either at this point.
If I was to do it again I would actually have got the SS3800 for the slightly bigger stall , better shift extentions, and the slightly harder hit off the line. I think it is a great combo and I am very glad I got it over my other choices which included a SY3500 (great TC, but just not for me). 3.73's would make the combo even more of a beast, but the 3.42's seem to match up well with the SS3600.
Good Luck

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (2001 Red Coupe Bandit)
Thanks for all on the suggestions. I just wanted to make sure it didn't feel real loose, which it sounds like the 3.73 will take care of that problem. I know it will be great for the track, but I drive the car in traffic everyday so I wanted to make sure it was still streetable enough not to drive me nuts on the street.

Darren, the high STR will help that a lot. It will definitely be tighter than the SY3500 combo, which IIRC didn't strike you as all that loose. When are you planning on doing this? I've had a SS3800 sitting around waiting to go in for like six months... I hope to get back to that project sometime early this fall. If you haven't pulled the trigger by then, you're welcome to a ride. :)

I have heard a few people tell me to go with the SS3800 instead of the SS3600. Is there a huge diffence between the two. Since I am concern with it being loose, is the 3800 alot looser then the 3600 or are they close to each other enough not to worry about?

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (VICOUS)
Therer si NOT a huge difference in the 2, just 200 RPM stall difference and a 2.55 STR on the 3800 vs. a 2.5 STR of the SS3600. The only reason I said the SS3800 might be better is that mine is already very tight and 200 RPM would be just a small increase.
If you are concerned about tightness, then get the SS3600 and you will be very happy, with 3.73's it will feel almost stock!! I promise.

Yes I would agree more on the fact of going with the SS3600 and 3.73's for everday use. The more I think about it, I think this is the route will be going when I have to replace the tranny soon as I will just upgrade to the 3.73's and stay with the SS3600. Think I will also go ahaead and add the hardened output shafts as well just for peace of mind.

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (brialex42)
I am considering doing a gear change and TC. Have a 1999 Coupe with 3.15 gears. Seems going with a SS3600 and 3.73 might be the ticket. Another question, is reprogramming needed when going from 3.15 to 3.73 and adding a TC?

Yes you will need reprogramming going from 3.15's to 3. 73's.
VStella.. Thanks for the info on the HD drive shafts. I will wait to see what happens with the tranny replacement. Just was thinking while I was in there again and already paying the labor, might as well add them witht he 3.73's as you never know what the future may bring.. NOS/Magnuson/427?? and with all the new goodies about to be released, hmm. could be interesting.

FWIW..I haven't heard of a A4 breaking a shaft...EVER..
...A quick 10 second search. I recall hearing about a couple more, but I do agree it is much rarer than the M6 breakages. :yesnod:

Re: SS3600 & 3.73 ?????? (The One)
:yesnod: Very few instances, but not unheard of. All leave hard. A trans brake (rather than foot brake) would probably make it more likely though...
Darren, you might also look at the higher stall models that aren't widely talked about, 4000, 4200... You might be surprised what advertised stall rating you could tolerate in a high STR/low gear setup. I'm in the middle of trading up and sometimes wonder if it'll be enough.

I won't mind going with a 4000, (great for the track) but my main concern is how loose it is driving around town in traffic and a sunday cruise with the wife.

What kind of cam to expect to be running? Something that produces more torque with less throttle than something that's skewed toward high RPM power will certainly feel tighter. Recall Gary is runnning a LPE? 224, a lot different from Scott's G5X-2. The descriptions above are colored by the cams in front of the converter. I think anything a little on the high side of 3500 is likely to be near the sweet spot when teamed with the right cam.

I am looking at three different setups. a.) LG's G5X-2 cam only b.) LG's heads and cam or c.) Magnacharger (intercooled when it comes out).
I noticed you live in Murphy, email vetdream@ev1.net I tried the CF IM but you have it turned off.
