Default Looking for a 12.2 at 116 MPH. Ideas please.

My performance goal is a quarter mile ETA of 12.2 or so at a MPH of 116-118 on my 2000 Coupe. Is this doable without forced induction (no N20) or sacrificing drivability / street ability? Based on my reading, it appears that my goals are realistic with a heads / cam (H/C) package. I would like the car to be very stock appearing, idle properly, etc. Also keeping the costs to a minimum is highly preferred. Based on my calculations I would need approximately 370-380rwhp to reach my goal. Are my goals reasonable and if so how best can I achieve them ?

Thanks,

Mark

I have been down this road. You will definitely need 400rwhp /tq to make a low 12 car, a good set of drag radials will also help alot. I go to Milan Dragway nearly every Wednesday and see alot of guys in the mid 12's with intake, heads, cam, exhaust, LS1 edit. The majority of these cars are running mid 12's at around 110 -114mph, they have the lopey exhaust sound at idle and are loud as hell when they take off down the track. The cars with the H/C and NOS are getting very low 12's and high 11's at around 116-122mph depending on traction and driving ability. I have driven a few of the H/C setups and they have great power but lose some of their stock smoothness with regards to driveability and the noise level inside the car was noticeably higher.

If retaining the stock driveability of the car is important you should consider forced induction i.e. Turbo or Supercharger, this will get you the performance you are after and retain the refined stock driveability of you car.

As an example I have the TTi Twin Turbo Kit from Detroit Speedworks, at 7# of boost my best 1/4 mile time to date on a 70deg day was 11.9 @ 122mph on 19" 295/35 Michelin Pilots, with a 1.8 60'. This is a very safe setup and you don't even know the power is there until you go looking for it. Car is super quiet and has not lost any of its stock driveability.

Good luck and beware once you start making horsepower you won't be able to stop.

I ran a 11.98 @ 120.35 MPH (1.98 60FT) with Goodyear street tires (non-runflat) on a cool February evening at Temple Academy Dragway (altitude 989 feet) with the following mods......

Donaldson intake
Smooth air bridge
Removed MAF screen
LS6 Intake manifold
Ported 5.3L LS1 truck heads
T1 cam from MTI
TPIS Headers
Corsa Touring exhaust
LS1 Edit computer programming

RWHP 410

(2000 C5 M6 Coupe)

Are there ways of achieving 116 MPH in the 1/4 without spending $10-20,000 on forced induction while retaining the pleasantries of a stock vehicle? I read in C&D or MT (I can't remember which) that the new Z06 runs 12.4 @ 116. How costly / practical would it be to upgrade to Z06 heads / cam ? Would upgrading to the Z06 heads / cam in concert with my existing mods give me 116 ish in the 1/4 ?

Thanks again,

Mark

:iagree:

Do the SAE Correction for elevation here in Michigan 450feet, and it would be around a 12.4 time.

I have yet to see a stock Z06 run a 12.4, There is alot of misinformation out there, I suggest you come out to Milan one Weds evening and see what is what there are usually a few stock Z06's as well as a few modified ones. What you see with your own eyes might suprise you.

How busy is it usually at Milan on Wednesdays? I have heard numerous complaints about people going out there and only getting one or two runs in, however, I'm not sure what day of the week they were referring to. Please advise.

It doesn't take much at all. My only time at the track so far I ran a 12:30 at 114 with my 2001 coupe only having a pulley, Borlas and a Blackwing

This is on stock runflats at 23 PSI, stock motor right down to the plugs and 3/4 tank of gas.
You might need to add the LS6 intake but that's about it. It's the only real difference between the two years but doesn't make much more HP.

My A4 has run 12.0's with only 320 to the wheels. For a MN6 that would be about 340rwhp, which should be easily attainable with bolt ons. But most importantly, pulling good times in a MN6 comes down to the driver, track conditions, Density Altitude(weather, elevation), and the driver.
In one of the latest GMHT they got a bone stock MN6 down the 1/4 in 12.7(correct me if I'm wrong) seconds at E-Town. In simular conditions, with some bolt ons and tires, low 12's should be attainable.

EDIT:forgot to add track conditions. :banghead:

Are you seriously complaining about 450 ft?

intake, headers, and exhaust should get you close

Put a small aftermarket cam in there and you will hit 116 for sure.

Can you explain how you came to that number (12.4) for me?

:skep:

Actually you do not need forced induction to accomplish your goals, a GOOD H/C package will be more than enough, take a look at some of "The Vette Doctors" or "Cartek's" packages and results, and if you want a solid 10 second car all you do is add nitrous.
read em and weep

Man, I read a very wide swing in ET's for the mods. I have an A4 with no heads/cam work ever....and run 12/30's @110 in 90 degree heat. I expect a 1/10th or 2 better when it cools to below 70. A MN6 is more efficient IF...and the IF is big, the driver can launch & shift perfectly it should run low 12's with bolt ons only as well. I consider myself a pretty good standard tranny driver and I spent a whole day trying to launch a MN6 correctly and only came close once, so I know it is not easy.

Our mods are:

Breathless rammer, LS6 intake, underdrive pulley, TPIS long tubes, gutted cats, SLP loudmouths, 3000 stall Yank, 3.42 gears and Jeremy Formato LS1edit tuning. All together maybe $3k in mods?

Good luck!!

4.10 gears, FLP headers, Blackwing, Underdrive pulley, LS6 intake, and new tires and you will run 12.2

:iagree: with all of the above and especially Traci's recommendation regarding the TIRES. All of the mods and rwhp/rwtq in the world won't help much unless you can put it to the ground.

Consider getting MT E.T. Streets or Drag Radials. My e.t. streets and skinnies got me three tenths all by themselves!

Correct me if I am wrong, but, wouldn't the car running in 450 feet perform better than a car running in 989 feet? If the air gets thinner as elevation increases, wouldn't the thinner air have an adverse affect on performance?

I have ran a constent 12.3 with a 2002 Coupe A4 without any internal motor work so yes its doable in stock form in fact you being a m6 should be a little easier, long as you can drive it.

Mods are in the Sig, dont include the nitrous the 12.3 was done on HP

See sig line under pic. I know you said without nitrous, but thats about the only mod I got besides cutouts. This was done on goodyears on the rears. Just given you an idea of what my car dynoed and ran at the track.
