Default LS1 cooling kit...just installed, is 162 degrees to cold on a cold day???

title says it all....god i love this forum....:)

I installed the kit yesterday it is the one with the relays and plugs into the thermostat. On the way to San Francisco last night after doing the install it was really foggy and moist outside and I noticed that the temperature on the dic said it was at 162 degrees but today when I was driving around it stayed around 178 to 185 and it was about 85 degrees outside, do you guys think this will be OK. From my understanding I thought this was to correct way to go to keep those temperatures in check.... After reading some of the posts here, I'm not sure if it was or not....... So any help would be much appreciated...... I hate when you try to make something better only to find out maybe that wasn't the right way to go..... :banghead: :banghead:

i took her out today for a drive and the temp stayed about 180 and the oil temp was at 190...it was about 66 degrees outside.......do you guys think this is still to low for the oil temp....

More important than T-stat is fan programing. We sell a adjustable fan kit where you can raise your fan temps to go on at 220-230(or so) in the winter.
Its on our site about 200.00.It wouldnt be a bad idea to change out to a hotter T-stat as well.Dave Smilovic.

Just my 2 noncents, but I fear that is tooooo cold. I like right between 180 and 185 if I can get it.

May be too cool. There may be additional wear on the engine at the 160 temperatures because of oil flow, also the oil will retain water and acids may build up in the crankcase.

The cool temperatures will delay the fuel injection going into closed loop operation. Open loop operation will reduce your gas mileage.

I have the same kit. I just disconnect it during the colder winter months and hook'er back up when it gets warm again (which here is most of the year). Pretty easy to do.

What's your oil temp? Should be between 200 and about 210 degrees. If not, too cold.

Yup, there was a whole nuther thread around here somewhere, where we covered the topic. You need the oil up to temp so that it will relase the moisture and achieve proper visocsity. Granted you will not get a lot, but even a little bit is too much. Also remember that the engineers have designed your car to run at a certain temp, ergo the closed loop discussed above. Bearing clearences and piston wall clearences all play a factor and today because everything is alum. a whole new set of expansion and contractions come into play over the older iron engines. Additionally there have been dyno tests done by several on this forum, and they have determined that the best HP comes in around 180 degrees and runs up to about 200 deg. (coolant) I run a 178 T'stat with water wetter and reprogramed fans and my oil temp runs in the slightly over 200 range, which is about where the engineers what it. The orig thought to running cooler was more HP by keeping the intake manifold cooler. On the new C5s that is less of an issue because your intake is now plastic. The other is the Throttle Body bypass, and I did do that, but the effect is nil in the grand scope of the world.

Just do some searches around the forum and you will get more information than you ever dreamed.

On a normal day, I set my temps to run between 180 and 190. My high speed fan hardly ever comes on only in stop and go traffic on very hot days. 100 to 110 degree days. Then she is up in the 199 - 220 range

Many thanks blue dragon and to all the others who responed...i will see tomarrow what the oil temp is when i take her out again...if it is to low i will disconnect and go with the setup you have since we live in the same area.....what a waste of 200 hundred dollars :_dupe: ....wondering who can reprogram my my fans in this area....should have done that from the start...but i thought this kit was the way to go.... :banghead:

What is the kit? I have the Vinci switch and can vary the on/off temps. If that is what you have, you can make some changes to alter the temperature.

there is no need for that low of a temp because dyno tests of LS-1/6 make the most power between 195/205 water temp. :chevy

I ‘m using a 160 thermostat with reprogrammed fans. The lowest temperature range I have seen is 174-177 with outside temps in the 30’s. On cool foggy nights like you were in, my temps run 182-185. In triple digit heat my temps don’t go over 195. It sounds like the fans are set to come on at too low a temp with the kit you are using.

the motor will work best and wear less around 200 degrees

Optimum oil temp is in the low 200's, and once fall arrives you won't be even getting close.
