Black Crap on Exhaust?
Please read before posting: I'm NOT talking about the tips. You can only see what I'm talking about when you have the entire cat-back system off.
Now that I've swapped cat-back's, I'm just curious what all the garbage is that seems to always be stuck to the top of the mufflers? No, not the black soot on the rear of the tips...the junk that accumulates on top of the mufflers. Just seemed kinda odd to me...tar from the road? Did GM try to paint them stock?

If it's exhaust soot that usually means your running rich. That was how my Indy's looked until I had my PCM re-programed.

Does the soot get that solid? It looks more like tar? You do know I'm talking about the solid stuff on the top of the muffler.

This is a new one on me. I've never had anything but soot on my exhaust tips.

Re: Black Crap on Exhaust? (BQuicksilver)
I have Corsa Indies and they always have black soot on them (on the inside of the exhaust tips) after a drive. It is just normal. I clean mine with a spray bottle with water in it and a cloth after they cool down and it just takes a minute.
I think this happens more often on after market exhaust systems :D

If you've drag raced little bits of rubber and VHT can accumulate on top of the mufflers and on the shields above them. :)

Everyone listen: I'm not talking about the tips in any way shape or form. When you take off the exhaust there is always a ton of black crap on top of the mufflers. You can only see this with the system totally off the car. :smash:

I know eaxactly what you are referring to.. It drives me nuts...
It mostly shows on the front side of the muffler that faces the rear of the tire..
My guess is it's just little pieces of road tar, rubber from the tires and if you race...VHT..
I use (Purple Degreaser from Home Depot)Careful this stuff is wicked strong and can remove your fingerprints!!!
Then I follow up with a little steel wool....I have even Claybar'd my Corsa Can's (With old claybar of course)

It comes from the opening above the muffler in the tirewell and the back of the car form a nice "pocket" to catch all the dirt and roadgime tossed up by the back tires. Unless you get down there and spray water when you wash, I doubt that area even gets wet unless it's driven in the rain.

Re: Black Crap on Exhaust? (BLOWN IN NC)
The only thing I get is burnt tire rubber from doing a burnout.

Yep, cost cutting shows up there too. I have polished mufflers (B&Bs) that make the job easier, but I crawl under there every once in a while and clean the top of the mufflers as far as I can reach. Doing this often will avoid 'crusting' the mufflers with that crap. My car hasn't seen rain, but when it does, I'll thoroughly wash it asap; that's when it gets 10 times worse.
Good weekend.

Great replies. I figured it might be somewhat tell-tale of tracking the car.

Re: Black Crap on Exhaust? (BQuicksilver)
Please read the post. I know soot accumulates on the tips from the engine.
Sorry I can't help on the "black material" issue, but I had to reply when I noticed how many attempts you've made to make people AWARE that you're NOT talking about what's in the pipes. HELLOOO!!!
Amazing isn't it??? Good luck! However, for what it's worth, I replaced my exhaust at around 3,000 miles, and noticed that GM had painted the mufflers black, but that's it. In your neck of the woods, it seems to me that a lot of cars used to have a sprayed on undercoat for sealer & road noise, but that would be all over.

Yeah, it's kinda peeve of mine here. I've posted about 20 threads where I swear guys never even read the first post. They just see the title and think they know what I'm asking about. :mad
Yeah, I was thinking they may have been painted...i'm glad you confirmed that.

My mufflers are painted too but most of it is comming off. I don't have any soot in my pipes-wouldn't that be an indication of rich jetting? Maybe if you hosed out your exhaust it wouldn't build up? Have you tried carb cleaner? I've heard of small animals building nests in there-have you tried rat poison? Do you think if you blew compressed air down the air filter you could blow it out of there? :seeya
