Default valve spring wars, where are we at?

having just broke a CC918 spring begs the age-old question: what are the most reliable high-perf springs available for LS1?? I try to keep my finger on the pulse of this topic but have not drawn a definitive conclusion. As Shirl builds my 436cid LS1 solid roller, springs will be a big issue. I am aware of the many dual spring setups that are proving to be reliable, but then i hear of the horror stories of the rocker bosses pulling out of the head due to the weaknesses created from the required machine work for the spring (and heavy intake ceiling porting). for cams with <.625 lift i am now hearing the Manley single ovate spring, #221423, is proving to be more reliable than the CC918. anyone can vouch for this?? Would like to hear some input on the latest experiences.

I would recommend the rev 1116. It fits the stock spring pocket, and doesn't require you to cut the head, unlike the comp 1.75" double spring.

54-VS1116 REV Dual Valve Springs, 1.25" OD (For stock spring pocket) Must use with 54-SC221 Hardened Seats & 54-TR9814 Titanium Retainers $139.99

54-SC221 REV Hardened Spring Seats for 54-VS1116 1.25" Double Valve Springs $44.99

54-TR9814 REV Titanium Retainers for 54-VS1116 1.25" Double Valve Springs $149.99

:iagree:

I also have the Rev 1116s on my car, no touble so far. I understand that Comp is also coming out with a dual spring that does not require machining your heads.

My heads from Katech came with the Comp Cams 941 spring, and afte 15k miles I have now broke 2 springs in the last 2k miles. Comp Cams told me to get the 918 spring, but I see that yours broke. My cam lift is 579, will the 918 work for me?
Thanks,
Shawn

Shawn, even though i broke one, i would still recommend the 918 for you with that lift. My cam is 236/236 .601/.601 112lsa. So, you should be fine. Also, it is possible i caught a bad batch of 918's when i purchased them last year. I dont think they have the blue stripe on them, which indicates the new/improved spring. I have heard from a number of very reliable sources to stay away from the REV1116. Every tuner i have talked to, for instance, wont touch the REV spring. Plus, i have seen a high failure rate here on the forum. So, I wouldnt buy them. some may be experiencing no problems with their 1116, but i have to go with the majority on this one. When I have several big name tuners telling me they have had terrible luck with them, I have to believe.

RWJ, I have not seen a single Rev 1119 spring failure here on the forum! Please enlighten me!
This subject is near and dear to my heart because I didn't get a big cam and more HP because of FEAR of spring failure.
I want to see the failure posts!

Hey rwj383, I run an ARE solid setup with 640 lift. I have 977 cc springs with T&D shaft rockers, never a problem. My cam is 640/640, 236/236, 112 lsa. Wish I had your cubes, though!

I have the ISKY Gold single springs. I think the model number is 295D. My tuner tells me they are guaranteed to .630 lift and he will comfortably put up to .650 lift on them.

His car has a big ole cam + rockers ammounting to about .670 lift and the ISKYs have not given yet.

'97 C5,

Thank you for posting numbers. First time I've seen spring numbers on any of these forums. They tell so much more than the typical "ACME #1234 springs are good for .580 lift" and "I have the BOUNCER 695's and my motor runs fine". None of these subjective statements means anything other than that spring works in that particular combination of cam grind, valve and retainer weight, RPMs, pushrods, etc. Most of the time, these other related particulars are NOT listed. This kind of data should be archived Cam numbers too. I don't mean just lift, duration and LSA but any Cam Dr. or EZ-Cam info (velocity, accel, etc.).

Based on the data you posted, I'm gonna look at the Comp 987 for a motor with .588 net lift, slightly higher than stock velocity and accel, 6800 RPM chip. Putting this spring in at 1.720 installed ht. will give about 150# seat and 388# open @ .032" (plus deflection) from coilbind. This provided the 987 doesn't have a bad rep for breakage (anyone?). I think this spring looks good for less than .600 lift if set up tight. It's a little wimpy on seat pressure over .600 lift. The Crane you listed would certainly control this valvetrain but would put more load on the cam, lifter and pushrod. I wouldn't think of running this spring with any less than a 3/8 pushrod. In fact I'll use 3/8 x .080 with the Comp spring.

Enough rambling.... Anyone else got numbers, spring or cam... post 'em and ask the moderators to archive this stuff.

We now have REV 1116 springs that are chrome plated. Somehow this is supposed to make them stronger.

CJS- the one post in particular that concerned me and others about the REV spring was: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=475082

Andy at A&A may be able to cite specific examples of failures of these springs. What i have found on the other posts like LS1Tech.com and LS1.com also concerned me. go to these sites and do a search..
