Fire extinguisher and ext. mount group purchase
Speed Direct would like to announce that we are now offering the Vetteworks fire extinguisher mounts for Corvettes. To kick this off we are setting up a group purchase opportunity for all Forum members. We are offering special introductory pricing and free shipping if we can get at least 10 orders lined up.
These fire extinguisher mounts are easy thumb screw installation designs that require no modifications to your car. Installation requires that the seat be adjusted to the rearmost position. Afterwards a small amount of forward adjustment is possible. If you require the seat to be adjusted forward in order to drive we recommend that you install the extinguisher on the passenger side.
For fire extinguishers we have the best built units in the industry. Amerex is a leader in quality and performance. Both dry chemical and Halotron extinguishers are available in your choice of red or chrome finish. They are supplied with double straps for the mounts to insure a positive attachment to the bracket. This isn’t a feature normally included when you buy these extinguishers from other dealers.
Z06 note: passenger side bracket is not available due to the seat adjustment lever.
Pricing for the mounts are as follows:
C5-9703D C5 extinguisher bracket for driver’s side (including Z06) $65.00
C5-9703P C5 extinguisher bracket for pass side $65.00
Pricing for the extinguishers are as follows:
417T Amerex 2.5 lb Red dry-chem extinguisher $32.00
417TC Amerex 2.5 lb Chrome dry-chem extinguisher $64.00
385TS Amerex 2.5 lb Red Halotron extinguisher $95.00
385TC Amerex 2.5 lb Chrome Halotron extinguisher $128.00
We don’t have these products on our web site yet so let us know of your intent to order here in this thread. Then you can call and identify yourself as a forum member and we can take care of things from there.
Any questions can be asked here, via e-mail salescf@speeddirect.com or 888 425-2776

Don't like in front of seat, to cluttered, can you make one that fits the little wall behind the seats. Thats the one that is between seat and rear compartment.

Placing a mount between the seats is an interesting idea. There has been a small discussion in the Z06 section about this. The problem is with fuel lines and such that are running behind the bulkhead. We are also providing kits that bolt in rather than those that require drilling for installation. It is, however, something that we will consider as a future product.

What type of extinguisher is better for a car, dry-chem, or Halotron? What are the pros and cons of each? I understand that Haoltron is corosive to metal, hence why it's not used in airplanes. Thanks for any info you can provide.

All you need is a spring clip that goes over the riser and the extinguisher. It's not between the seats it's the piece that runs from side to side. You lay the extinguisher down on the storage compartment floor and the clip holds it the riser. Then all you have to do is reach behind the passerger seat and wa la it's in your hand. I beleive that peice is in the coup also. If you need clarification just email and I'll try and get a photo of it.

Actually, Halotron I has been approved by the FAA as of Oct 02. It is a matter of slow government action, not corrosive properties, that kept it from being approved. In fact Halotron is completely non-corrosive and dry-chem can be extremely corrosive if water is present. Those are the basic comparisions. Halotron is more expensive but it leaves no residue and is non-corrosive. Dry-chemical extinguishers are lower cost but leave significant residue that can be difficult to clean and that residue is very corrosive to metal if it gets wet. Personally, I only use Halotron or Halon (which is unavailable or very expensive now) because it is better at extinguishing a fire and because it doesn't leave any residue.

Re: Fire extinguisher and ext. mount group purchase (Speed Direct)
What is the shelf-life on these extinguishers? Most building ext. are refilled/refreshed once per year. This is probably due mostly to fire codes but knowing the life of the extinguisher is very important. Also what is the heat limit since the inside of a car can get hot in the summer time?
Thanks in advance.

jimman, both work fine in open areas. It's more a matter of technique. Standing upwind is required and the less breeze, the better but wind affects even water/fluid type systems.
Sir Sel, shelf life is 6 to 10 years, perhaps longer. There is no maintenance required other than an occasional check of the charge gage. If it ever shows lower than full charge the extinguisher can be taken in and topped off. You don't need to replace the entire unit. These extinguishers are able to handle 170 degrees without trouble so they will be fine in a car.
You are correct that the fire codes require annual maintenance for fire extinguishers in commercial buildings. One thing that can also be checked is the weight of the extinguisher. If it's a 2.5 lb unit then it will actually weigh 2.5 lbs when it is fully charged. So if you doubt the gage you can weigh it.

I have a harness bar that was designed to have an extinguisher attached to it. Do you have any pics of the clamp that holds the the extinguisher to your floor bar so I can get a sense of whether I could attach it to my harness bar?
Thanks

kraff, I apologize for taking so long to get a picture. I had a few issues getting the pic on our server. Anyway, here it is.
On the right are the 3 button head fastners that mount to the floor bracket. You can also see two holes in the middle of the bracket and a similar 3 hole pattern on the left side. Any of these can be used to mount the extinguisher. Let me know if you have other questions.
