Default Stock airbox cover mod

Hi all,
Can somebody point me to a "how to" about doing this to the cover of the stock airbox on a '97, please? I want to mod my stock one before I reinstall it back on. It's the mod with a bunch of holes drilled into the plastic cover to open it up. Thanks

Steve

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but just pop off the top of the cover (it's not tough at all) and start drilling 1 inch holes. Not much more to it.

Or you could do the zip tie mod. Remove the cover completely and use zip ties to go over the filter tray. Just tie them to the holes for the metal bands at the front and the handles on the back. Works great. Just make sure if you do this (or the filter lid hole mod) to get a front hood seal. I've had the zip tie mod on my Z for about a month now with no problems and it's a daily driver.

That's what I did with my dad's Vette. There's a pretty big difference.

I'm trying to buy another box cover to modify the same way. I've seen numerous ideas, but the best way IMHO is to cut BIG holes in the top without destroying the structural integrity so you can still buckle the whole assembly down. I'm also thinking of doing something more permanent, similar to the nylon tie trick mentioned earlier. I don't like the idea of sliding the filter in. I want to grease the filter gasket and place it on the box, assemble, and reinstall as one piece. From what I've read it's not too difficult to remove the assembly as a unit. I'm going to try an AMSOIL foam filter. Flows a little less than the K&N, but it will be easier to clean, and I think they claim to remove finer dirt particles. Gonna pull the MAF screen and polish it at the same time.

BTW, every edge you create with a hole will disturb airflow, thus the recommendation to go as big as possible. The only way to get better underhood filter performance, IMHO, is to go with a Blackwing.

Search for a "Tshac" post - go to his web site - the detail is there - he might have a template - I know he has done some for people. Mine is what we call the "Stealth" version as it has many holes but none of them are visable from an open hood view.

get a MID AMERICA catalog as they show a picture of their cut air box. i have sketch for a cover to prevent water getting into the filter when you open a wet hood. it also hides the hole. i can scan it to you if you like to have it. :chevy

Try an 2002 or later Z06 Air Filter Box lid for $48, you won't have any water problems. More performance and better sounding too!

:iagree: Just take the stock air lid off and leave it off. Just use tie wraps instead.
