Default C5 Weight Reduction

First, what is the weight of a C5 Coupe? (Preferrable someone who put their car on the scale at a track and not magazine published weight)

Second, has anyone done any weight reduction to their C5?

Example, A/C = ???lbs , sound deadening =???lbs, etc.. etc..

On the Fbodies we were able to take out quite a bit of weight but the C5's look like GM really tried to save weight where they could.

I'm trying to find 100lbs or so off the car without changing wheels...

I did a full weight reduction on a C5 and to be honest, there wasn't much.

The interior is very light and there is no sound deadening material sprayed onto the interior.

After we put the rollcage in, it was about stock weight again.

Hey Darkside, since you did a full weight reduction, did you keep track of the stuff you did? What was the rollbar, 60lbs? If so, where did you find 60lbs at?

By far the easiest two ways to reduce the most amount of weight are:

1) Replace the exhaust with a Ti one.
2) Replace the tires with non-runflats (since this is rotating mass, it will have a greater overall effect than static mass).

Aside from these, consider whether or not the driver can reduce his/her weight.

Already have the Z06 Ti on..

Driver can stand too loose about 10-15lbs. ;)

I was thinking about the Hawker battery since it weight 13.5lbs but am concerned about it not being big enough for the vettes electrical demands.

And your talking about the small 13.5lb one right?

If so have you considered putting it in your C5 yet?

Some ideas.....
carbon fiber hood....10lbs
lighter battery......12lbs
eradispeed rotor set.....16lbs
aluminum flywheel......17lbs
headers for coupe.......17lbs less than manifolds
donut eating driver.....up to 50lbs in some cases
don't fill the gas tank.....1/2 take is 60lbs less
don't date fat chicks...i didnt say phat chicks
under-drive pulley...1lb
use glass top....3.5lbs
carbon fiber driveshaft....7lbs
zo6 windsheild.......6lbs
TI corsa exhaust .....15lbs
get old laundry out of rear compartments....?
don't chrome wheels......4-7lbs
by the way....the stock runflats are not any heavier than most aftermarket tires....I had weighed the rears 33.5 against SO3 pole positions 33lbs....that is a false rumor....I heard it too as 23.5 lbs heavier than non runflat set.

Our warm weather is coming everyone....enjoy.

I am a new Corvette owner but I recall seeing hollow aftermarket Anti-roll bars. Don't know how much weight they would save.

Well, the rumor has been published, and forum members in the past have claimed to weigh their new tires versus the RF's and found there to be a more than trivial weight savings. I would list posts for you, but the search function seems to be hosed again (I can't even get a hit on the word 'tires' in the C5 perf archives).

Here is a quote about the Z06 tires:

"While larger, these tires are much lighter than the EMT tires, reducing mass by a total of 10.6 kilograms (23.4 pounds)."

and here is where it is from:

https://www.corvetteforum.com/01.php

*EDIT* - crap - looks like the competing forum URL got hijacked. It was on the z06 vette forum - I hope I'm not breaking any rules by citing a source of info - I don't happen to use that site at all and only went there because this forum's search wasn't working**

I'm not saying this web site is correct - just that it has formally published this information.

Any chance your Pole Positions are just heavier than most aftermarket tires? I find it hard to believe that the weight of the car can be supported by a sidewall by adding so little mass (to the runflats).....

rotating mass like wheels/tires etc is where you will get the best bang for buck. I beleive the rule of thumb is for every 1 pound of rotating mass, is equal to 7 pounds of dead weight.

Shawn - Yes, however there is some confusion it seems with the weight of the run flats. I'll have to weigh them myself. I know that my 315 ZR1 rims (17x 11 rim) and nitto 315 DR weigh about 55lbs.

Someone said that the 18" runflats with 2001+ thin spoke polished is 60lbs.

Just weighed a 2001 17" front thin spoke C5 rim with a BFG drag radial on it and it cam in at ~ 43lbs.

Will have to pull the runflat off the car and let you know the weight. If it is in fact 60lbs like I was told, then regular rubber would be a MAJOR weight savings on these cars... somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 lbs or so

I have an 18 inch runflat dismounted, that I will weight for you when I get home.

I also have a chrome Y2K style aftermarket wheel I can weigh for grins.
