torque converter and rear gear advice needed
I have decided that 3.42 gears are right for my application. No track use, some stop light games lot's of highway driving on Goodyear run flats. What I have not decided yet is on the torque converter. 1st, what is the stock stall speed? As I mentioned I will be using this car 100% of the time on the street as a daily driver. I am unfamiliar with the drivability of a higher stall speed converter. I like responsiveness and don't want to feel like I have a slipping transmission all the time. Resale is important so I don't want it to be so obvious that the car has performance parts installed. With all that being said, I guess I would like to consider a more conservative stall speed converter. What do you guys think? How much performance gain will I obtain?

Re: torque converter and rear gear advice needed (curtowens)
The 3.42's are the converter of choice..I hd them for over a year with the Pro Torque 2800 converter www.protorque.com....a GREAT street combo! :smash: Tight and responsive..a great street converter and you wouldn't even know there was a 2800 stall there because of the 2.20 stall rate. The stock converter is JUNK!!...only a 1200-1400 stall speed and just plain sloppy and slush..your making the right move.:yesnod:
I will tell you that without the Transgo shift kit installed in the transmission's valve body you will missing out in lightning quick shifts and a much more versatile transmission with much better throttle resonse. The Transgo kit is a natural for the C5 A4..best bang for the buck out there for the A4...PERIOD

The PT2400 or the PT2800 are excellent street converters that will give you plenty of lowend grunt without losing any driveability.

Just for information, go to ( converter.cc ) this is a Yank webb page but it is full of converter information. I'm not suggesting any brand or application, but this webb page helped me decide what was best for how I use my car. It's like chicken soup it can't hurt.

Re: torque converter and rear gear advice needed (curtowens)
Just had a Yank 3000 installed. I love it. Drives like stock and even with my 3.15 rear end, the car breaks traction and wants to go sideways from a start. I think I am going to like this combination... I initially had some problems because the tech that installed the converter did not top off the transmission completely. It was about a quart low and that effected shifting. I also had the computer flashed back to stock (had Powerloader II). The computer is slowly relearning everything.

Re: torque converter and rear gear advice needed (Norris)
If I decide to keep my 3.15 gears due to my many miles of highway driving at 80+ mph, and go with the PT 2400 converter for a better launch with no loss of driveability, will any PCM reprograming have to be done for any reason?

I think the stock stall is 1200- 1600 area.
If no drag racing and only running emts you want one of the lower stall converters like the Yank 3000 or the Pro Torque 2400 and you should be fine.
rpm at cruising will go up so any reasonably aware vette shopper can tell at crusing speed that the gear/converter are not stock.

Since I also do a lot of 80+ cruising, is the performance of the 3.73's that much greater than the 3.42's? How much difference is there? And what converter are you running?

Ok guys you talked me into the 3.42 gears. I ordered them from the local Chevy dealer today. i am going to leave the torque converter stock however. I am concerened about the loss of low rpm response. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress. Thanks again! :chevy

Change the converter!!! You will love it. I am changing my Yank 3000 next week to a SY3500.
