Default Z06 or Stinger Exhaust

I don't know which one is better/to get. The stinger or the Z06 exhaust. Thoughts? Weight and hp gains?

BORLA Stingers...

i believe they are lighter than the Stock ZO6 Ti exhaust

and sound MUCH better.

Stinger DUAL tip is really good in terms of bang for the buck.
they are light, sound amazing, BORLA quality, and one of the cheapest setups out there !!

I love Borla on stock cars, even my modifed beast. I did think about stock Z exhaust when I whacked the cats and installed headers , heads and cam. That was a little louder..

Borla Stingers ARE heavier than ZO6 exhaust.

Borla Titanium system ($2500) is lighter than the ZO6 exhaust

I dont know why so many people think the stingers is lighter than the ZO6 exhaust

u sure about that ?

thought i read somewhere that Stingers weighed LESS than the Stock ZO6 setup

regardless, there is not much too them.

The SLP loudmouth are probably lighter.

or the Corsa Ti system

Yeah thats what I am confused about. I would think the z06 is lighter because of being made out of titanium. However I have seen Z06ers put on stingers. I assume the stingers even though weighing more have a better hp increase?

Default Re: Z06 or Stinger Exhaust (JeffsVette)

I just put borla 2 tip stingers on a couple days ago, they are very loud at 1500-2500rpm under load and they are a lot louder at WOT (I have the cats on the car) then the Ti. Its not bad inside the car at 2000rpm on the highway but I'm not into the sound of the Borla, the Z06 at WOT really has a nice 'refined' sound.

I'm going to dyno car in a few days when the barometer gets back up here so I can make a fair comparison - honestly I like the Z06 system better. If the stinger gets me 5rwhp avg after a few pulls I'll keep it on. One thing I dont like about the stinger is they really shake a lot at idle - I mean a LOT, the corsa I had and Z06 didnt move.

As far as weight according to my scale the stingers weighed one pound less per side then the Ti, I had to balance the Ti on the scale though. The borla is 2 pieces and I just stacked them so there was probably some error - either way they are pretty close. The pipe on the Borla is very thin/light, probably way it bounces around at idle also. The corsa over the axle pipe weighed twice what the borla one does..

I'm pretty sure in the next couple days the Z06 system will be back on the car

Honestly the Corsa Pro tips looked the best, hated the sound though. The Zo6 lools pretty good and I'm not really sure about the stinger - looks a little ricey to me :(

Might want to read this:

http://www.corvettefever.com/techarticles/79779/

" The new Borla system doesn’t look like, sound like, or flow like any C5 or Z06 system ever built. Imagine the possibilities of twice the flow in an exhaust system, horsepower numbers that equal open exhaust, and weight that’s less than the original titanium system! "

Very interesting KP. I like a little bit of sound however if the car really shakes at idle I don't know if my passengers would like that.

The car shakes no matter what exhaust is on it (I have a cam) but its the tailpipes that bounce up and down 1-2 inches at an idle that I dont like. I think its because the tubing is so thin, I moved the mufflers/over the axle pipes this morning trying to put more tension on the middle springy-hanger but it didnt help. I dont think a stock car will rattle around like mine, what it boils down to IMO between the Z06 and the stinger is if you want it to sound like you are 16yrs old or 60

If the weather holds up I'm going to make a 400 mile round trip to the dragstrip - I'll see if I can still hear when I get back :)

If you absolutely can't make up your mind which one to get, do this - buy a used Z06 system and try it. If you don't like it, you can sell it for what you paid and all you've lost is a little time and a few $ if you have to ship it. If you try an aftermarket system first and then try to sell it, you'll lose a lot more (look at the for sale section) and still have to ship it. Good luck

yes i am positive the borla stainless steel stingers are heavier than the ZO6 system. I didnt know how to post this link, but this is a tidbit of the "which is heavier system" Borla stingers are heavier than the stock ZO6 system. yes i am sure about that ;)

Been thinking about getting a new exhaust for the Z (tis too quiet for my tastes!). In the past, I've seen posts where people were saying that the Borla Stinger cat-back is as light, or lighter than the stock Z06 exhaust.

On the video that came with my Z, Chevy says the cat back exhaust weight to be something like 17lbs. Can't remember the exact number, but I'm pretty sure it was in the teens. The shipping weight on the Borla Stingers is over 50lbs!!!

Am I totally off here? Or are we talking about a pretty sizeable difference? Anyone know for sure?

I thought the stock exhaust was 17 lbs per side for a total of 34 lbs.

I imagine the shipping weight is 5 to 10 lbs higher for all the packaging materials and stuff, but that still makes them heavier than stock.

The stock Ti pipe is about 23lbs total, the 2 tip stingers are 34+lbs..

From the CATs back:

Stock C5 = 55 #'s
Stock Z06 = 37.5#'s
Corsa Ti Race system = 19#'s

Your number is about correct in that the Z06 is about 17#;s lighter than the Stock C5

The Borla Stinger uses the stock "H" Pipe and connects just before the overaxel and replaces the stock Z06 mufflers. I'm not sure that it saves much weight at all.

I need a new garage scale then, I just went out and weighed my stock Ti system - and it came out to 26lbs.. *shrug*

Does that mean the H pipe only weighs 10lbs?

reguardless of the exact numbers, it looks like we're talking about ~15lbs. difference. Not really much to worry about I guess. I'll make up for it with the driver's weight differences. "in this corner, weighing in at a whopping 120lbs, MacMan!!!"

Just seems like a shame to add weight after Chevy worked so hard to reduce it in the Z06. Can't afford the aftermarket Titaniam exhausts, or that might be a good way to go.

I thought about just switching to an 02 exhaust cause I know they're louder, but it still doesn't sound great to me. I loooved the Bassani exhaust in my Cobra. Not too loud, but definitely a nice, aggressive sound.

Anyhow, thanks for the help guys.

The stock titaniums weigh 26 pounds (13 lbs per side) the Borla 2 tips weigh 37 lbs. I have the 4 tip Stingers but haven't weighed them . I'd imagine they are close to the 2 tips weight though.

I just looked at the UPS reciept for my Z06 exhaust. Both sides were wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap then strapped together with each tip wrapped and then a small box put over just the tips and secured to the bundle. Shipping weight was 27.9 lbs.

I tried the SLP Loudmouths, but the resonance was too much for me, so I went with a used Z06 Ti system. I really like it as it has a much nicer sound than the stock C5 system, and the light weight is really nice. You won't be disappointed with a Ti system. :yesnod:
