Default D@MN Emissions!!! Central PA WATCH OUT!!!

Ok in the paper today there is emissions testing coming to Central PA. I am planning on putting Long tube headers on. Will my car still pass emissions w/ no pre-cats and the A&A exhaust modification?

You may fail visual, but your emissions will pass if you're in tune :yesnod: The pre-cats are only for the cold start emissions.

Southeast PA has had the test in wheel motion for about 5-6 years now. Used to work part time at a gas station when i was in school and saw the transition. Good for the environment, bad for my old Trans AM

Good for the environment,
with over 92% of vehicles passing the emission tests... how does this improve anything?

A gross emitter produces up to 20 times more pollution in a 5 minute period than a well tuned vehicle. That is how!

If emission testing is about the enviroment and not about money, then why not pass or fail on tail pipe only. What does visual have to do with emissions. Who care what controls the vehichle has if it can pass a tail pipe test. I think it is about revenue generation way more than environment IMHO.

Here in GA they started by doing it every other year. Then they said it was too confusing for people so now its every year for cars more than 2-3 years old.

I had a 91 infinity G-20 that had 170k on it that failed. I took very good care of this car and replaced o2 sensors ect when the factory recommended. Anyway I paid about $100 to get it to pass. From what I hear all they do is change some settings to get it to pass and then return the setting to normal so that it will run right.

Now in GA if your car is 96 or newer all they do it hook up to the OBD-II and if you have no codes you are fine.

Its all about the money. All this enviromental crap is about the money.

 I wonder if I'll have problems passing with no mufflers and longtube headers? I still have the cats though. :blueangel:

I just took another car to emissions last week here in AZ, it was a 1998 model - all they did was plug in the OBD-II scanner, didn't get any codes, so it passed. No visual test, nothing. If your test is the same, then as long as you have O2 simulators or your cats keep it clean enough to not trip the factory post-cat O2 sensor code, OBD-II won't know that anything's been changed.

If emission testing is about the enviroment and not about money,
then why isn't the test FREE for those that pass... kinda like a reward?

Come down here to Alabama where we don't have testing and it's evidently legal to drive anything you can push into the street and you won't say that.

brewtoo,

doesn't that then tell how screwy this government testing is? They're testing in the wrong places.

BTW, in the areas where I am familiar with emission testing; if you are poor can prove (with a written estimate) that it would take more than $300 of repair to get a vehicle to pass; you are given a waiver (instead of mandating the car not be licensed or driven).
If you are rich and prove that you indeed have spent at least $300 on your car and it still doesn't pass the test; you are given a waiver (instead of mandating the car not be licensed or driven).

So all the middle class end up with NO WAIVER.

This is why the government should of never got involved in the first place. Once federal mandates were made law covering the sale of new cars... it should of stopped there. But nooooo; there was a viable method to take even more of your earned money... disguised as environmental concern.
Its a farce; and I didn't fall for it.

Hmm...I see your point. It appears that it is really about enhancing revenue, not reducing pollution. With all the waivers, what's the point?

at one time that would of been called "blackmail"

interesting that my state sends in large sums of collected road taxes to the feds... and the Feds then turn around and offer it all back to us (minus their servicing fee)... but with a few added stipulations. :mad
