There are quite a few reasons, here are just a few:
AM is mono and terrible on sound quality, at best.
FM can be stereo, but has a narrow frequency range. Still soso quality.
Your antenna or circuit may be bad.
Radio tuners are acceptable to alternator whine, spark plug noise, relay and switch arcs, etc
Your tuner circuit in the radio may be bad.
You are outside the fringe area of the stations.
The CDs are usually high quality audio. They have a wide frequency range and good stereo separation.
If they are in good physical shape, they have almost no noise or distortion.
The CD and radio uses the same amp and output, but their inputs are different.
One can work, perfectly, and the other not at all.
