Default LS1 w 1st Generation AFR Heads Pass CA Smog?

Wondering if anyone here with an LS1 and first generation AFR Heads is passing CA smog or if the stock LS1 Heads need to go back on the block. The smog shop detected the Vararam air intake and told me to R&R with the stock air intake and that was after a mild Cam was R&R with the stock cam. What a pain, if I could take the ocean with me, I'd be long gone from this FUBAR State!

If they don't have a CARB EO#, then just cross your fingers dude doesn't find that too.

I had some of the earliest 225 CNCd AFRs around, in December of 2004. IIRC, the 205s had the EO, but not the 225s. A call to AFR OR Tony Mamo (who developed them!) would probably be in order. If they arent EO'd, it'll be hard to sneak them thru with a huge AFR on the end of the head, but who can say for sure?

If you read this, they are 50 state legal. CARB info is in there too.

You can’t see the logo on the drivers side, pass side you have to look close.

But, moot point since they are legal

The tricky part is even if the heads are CARB approved themselves...unless they can run on a stock tune, there might still be chance it gets called out for modified software. C5s seem to be clear so far, so finger crossed you should be ok. Definitely report back, we need all the info we can get since the new law regarding modified software just came out about a year ago.

Another thing I did was R&R the up and down stream 02 sensors with the cam and performance tune still in place. The stock tune is back on the car and the engine runs well with the AFR heads still on. Removing the CAM cleared the X on the scanner for the CATs. We will see stock air intake does for the smog sensor.

That's easy enough to swap in and out for a smog check.

It's the Vararam that is the pain to R&R. hoping the intakes can remain in place.

Just scribble a CARB EO# on there from some other CAI, maybe he won't notice.

Default Passed ca smog

Had to remove the Cam, HP Dyno Tune, VaraRam Intake, Tubi Exhaust. Initially I was told to "just drive" and the sensors would clear, but they never did. I had the 02 sensors replaced in case they were fouled by several years of LG Long Tube headers, but the new sensors did not clear the CATs which stayed in 'X' mode until the Cam and Tune were stock. AFR LS1 Heads did not appear to be a problem. Very painful and expensive effort to get the car re-registered in the Republic of CA . . .
