Default axle nut torque

What is the proper torque for an axle nut on a 2001 Z06?

New nut and red loctite as well. There is a GM TSB where 04 models get torqued to 160 lb feet. Makes me wonder why earlier C5s wouldn't as well......

Is there something special about the '04 models?

I'd like to see that bulletin. I torqued mine to 120, which in the grand scheme of torque is "damn tight". I didn't use any loctite of any flavor.

Also of note-- be sure to do this torque process with the parking brake set. It will make the process far easier and more precise.

When disassembling my car for a differential repair, I found one of the axle nuts was much too loose (one side wants to loosen and the other tighten just from driving). Read through all the threads on original torque, service bulletin torque, broken axles from over torque, ... Decided against torquing above the original spec. I used new nuts with red loctite and marked them so I could see if it rotates. Sure enough it rotated during my first track event.

In the end I just double nutted that side and it hasn't moved in years.

Like I said, makes me wonder why not include the 97-03 C5's. I like the idea of marking your rear axle nuts and then you can tell if they have moved.

Remove the center cap from the rim.
Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft nut.
Apply LOCTITE™ 272, or equivalent, to the threads of the axle shaft.

I have done the same as well but I have also torqued down some when replacing axles when I worked at a couple different shops. My vette I would just impact it and try that mark method to see if it moves but I have never had to replace one of mine though. I think it would be fine lol. But I do know their are torque specs for a reason.

My 300ft-lb battery operated gun cant do any more damage than the 400ft-lb engine turning them, lol. Thats my thought process anyway.
