Default 98 Convertible Gas Smell

I have been experiencing a gasoline smell when I fill the tank. It's not just gas station fumes, it stays with the car for a while. I can find no leaks, and I stop the pump on the first shut-off. It may be my imagination, but it only seems to do it when the top is down. I have to ventilate my garage for several hours and then it seems to go away, and stays gone until fill up with the top down.

Any similar problems out there? Suggestions?

the gas tank vents through the charcoal canister. you probably have a plugged vent path or the charcoal canister is saturated with liquid.

Is your car possibly a flood damaged car?

Not flood damaged that I know of. Title was clean. Where is the charcoal cannister?

Neither !!…just an inspection. No check engine light ??…if it were a crack in the top of the tank let’s say you would most most likely throw an EVAP DTC…best to find someone with a smoke machine.

BAC, do you 'top' off your tank at fill up? I once had the same smell but only after I tried to squeeze the last drops into the tank. Now I fill until the nozzel auto stop engages. No more top off and no more smell.

Have you checked the DIC to see if you have any codes. Normally if you have even a small leak the computer will pick it up.

Yes, and there are no codes having to do with fuel or emissions systems.
