Default 2004 Automatic Transmission questions

After many a month sitting in the garage not going anywhere I've replaced the battery and driven her several hundred miles just to shake the dust off.

Now comes the "issue" I noticed today:
Parked the car, started the car, tried to put it in reverse and it wouldn't find it. Turned the car off, put it in reverse and all is ok
Got home, pulled in the garage, tried to put it in park and it wanted to keep going forward. Turned it off.

Now I'm nervous to try to drive it before I figure out what could be wrong and where would the best place be to fix it.
I saw some posts about the shifter cable bushings - could that be it?

(Posted for my wife, we live outside of Winchester, VA so if you have a go to shop near there that won't cost an arm and a leg )

Thanks in advance for your time
James & Susan

The bushing failing is a common issue, kind of sounds like what your experiencing. There are YouTube videos on replacement if your interested in DIY

Anyone have the part number for the cable?
I can't seem to find it.

Yes after 15 - 20 tries to get that bushing in the socket I broke the darn cable. I am beyond frustrated

I don't know where you broke the shift cable, but I have a suggestion that will have EVERYONE laughing at me. I broke my A4 shift cable in the rear, somewhere near where it attaches to the trans. This happened about 7 years ago (Fall, 2014), so I don't remember exactly where it broke. I do remember it was where the inner plastic piece would slide in and out of the outside piece. If you haven't already guessed, I used JB Weld!!!!! YES-Steel epoxy!! 7 years, 30,000 miles later, nobody knows it's glued, except me. And, of course, now all of you!!

That fits only up to 2003 according to all the searches I did.
I hope this one 10352529 is the right one. gm parts direct shows it as the correct cable for a 2004.
