Heavy drivetrain shake during acceleration
Hey all, 02Z here with almost 95k miles. I am almost at my wit's end with this issue. I purchased the car with what felt surely like wheel hop but could have been a combination of both wheelhop and drivetrain shake and been trying to fix the issue ever since.
Some people said it was the tires. I purchased brand new Nitto NT05's. Didn't fix the issue.
Some people said it was bad motor mounts. I installed brand new GM OEM motor mounts. Didn't fix the issue.
Some people said to get an aftermarket transmission mount. Today, I installed a PFADT transmission mount. I seriously thought it was going to be the cure, but a test drive tonight proved that the issue is still existing....
And actually starting to feel worse. The new transmission mount is definitely making the rear end feel more solid. But, instead of wheel hop, I am getting a very heavy and distinctive shake/judder coming from what seems like RIGHT BEHIND the radio/HVAC controller/AC outlet area.
Again this is not constant shaking/juddering but only during attempts to launch the car, accelerate hard in 1st gear or an aggressive 1st to 2nd shift.
My buddy thinks it could be my clutch assembly but I find that so hard to believe because I had a brand new OEM factory GM replacement clutch and flywheel installed about 5k miles ago.
Any ideas? I am seriously at my wits end with this issue and am sick and tired of playing the guessing game and throwing money at it. I had the same issue with a Mustang I used to have, and ended up with almost full aftermarket suspension and the issue persisting.
I have a new set of C6 Z06 shocks that are still waiting to go in but I'm thinking this won't fix the issue due to the shaking coming from what feels like the middle of the car and not the rear end.

I doubt it....when I had the clutch assembly replaced, I had the entire torque tube inspected and the bushings and bearings literally looked and felt brand new. I had a feeling it was replaced prior to my ownership. The car generally drives super smooth otherwise...

what pressure are the tires?... are the pads on the pfadt mount putting pressure on the cradle on both ends?... those pads should touch the cradle to keep it from rocking back and forth, if they aren't touching you can install some shims to fill the gap... shocks would be another thing to look at... it might be worth checking the suspension and cradle bolts to make sure everything is tight

Tires are 30-31psi all around. Rubber ends on the PFADT mount are firmly seated against the subframe...I triple checked during the install.
Could it really be the shocks? Once again this heavy juddering seems to be very clearly coming from the middle of the car. It literally feels like it is coming from behind the console between the shifter and radio area.

any other than a factory rear mount will cause issues, I installed a Hinson rear and thought the car was coming apart ??? it makes the drive train noise go though the torque tube like a stethoscope !!!!! also with the clutch replaced were the balance plugs in the flywheel reinstalled if there was any ???

This product didn't completely remove what feels like wheel hop but I'd say it reduced it 90% on my SC 99

Any other ideas guys?? Is there a chance that maybe my existing shocks are bad and for whatever reason, I am mainly feeling it in the middle of the car now as opposed to the rear, due to my new trans mount making it so solid in the rear? Is that possible?

Could it really be the clutch assembly? It was doing this even before the clutch change and has always done it, just seemingly more pronounced now after the new trans mount.
The car drives super smooth at all speeds and all RPM’s....just when the tires would seemingly spin, I will get the hop or powertrain shake.

Maybe clutch chatter,very odd,try some different tires just to rule that out

I know it would be more money,but maybe try a different brand clutch set up, I know it's not good to keep throwing parts at it

I’m not going to reinstall a new clutch and just pray that it fixes the issue unless I could know for certain beforehand.
I just installed a completely brand new OEM GM replacement clutch assembly not long ago and paid my mechanic for the 10+ hour job that it took...this was only like 5k miles ago.
I’ve had no clutch vibration or chatter or any orher issues so far.
I’m not going to reinstall a new clutch and just pray that it fixes the issue unless I could know for certain beforehand.

My issue only happens when the tires spin.
I can drive the car normal all day at all RPM’s, or floor it on the freeway from 2nd or 3rd gear all the way to 5th and it will drive nice and smooth with no issues.
This is only happening when the wheels spin, ie. 1st gear pulls, attempts at launching the car from a stop, etc.

But this is normal for the tire size and style we are using. Example my car will wheel hop as well if it were to get on it ! New tires. Buy a set of street radial drag tire like Mickeys or something . If u feel it’s off I would change my ball joints and A arm bushing,wheel bearings. Upgrade to drag spindles ect.

I have literally the exact same problem with my 01z. Same tires and trans mount in attempt to fix it. Nasty drive train shake in front of the shifter area whenever the car is fighting for traction. 1st and 2nd gear only.

Throwing darts, but someone on here had headers and a mid pipe and turned out they were too close to the tunnel and was banging in certain situation in the shifter area.
Could get a go pro and mount it up in diff spots to look for play/vibration as you replicate the issue, see if anything jumps out. Chris fix recently did this to show all the slop he had in the rear bushings in his mustang. Ignore the content of the video just look for where it shows the car backing up and how video showed it.

I had my car on the hoist today and could not find any evidence of the exhaust touching the body anywhere. With a pry bar, I can not find any excessive play in the drive train/exhaust.
I think my next step will be stiffer motor mounts and hope for the best.
