Redline is good oil and 0w-40 is fine, I’ve ran mobil1 0w-40 for years

I've never used Redline engine oil, but their gear oils and trans oils are pretty good. I have used Mobil One 0W-40 (European formula) in the Z and various other GM vehicles over the past 20 years with no problems. This oil has excellent cold flow due to the 0W rating and good high temp protection with the 40 weight. Royal Purple also has a good 5W-40 oil that I've also used in my Z.

Its your choice, but you dont need high dollor Red Line oil. If you only drive the car in the summer, you dont even need 0w_40 oil. Use whats recommended on the oil fill cap. Its just as good and you will be money ahead.

Yeah, I mean, the recommended oil is on the filler cap. Why do you want to change? What are you hoping to achieve?

I ran Red Line 10W-40 for about 8 years. Two years ago I switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula when it became full available as a full synthetic. Some years ago, Mobil 1 was a synthetic "blend" but now is available as a full synthetic.

Some years ago the Mobil 1 in house expert recommended to those Corvette owners that run their cars on the track to drain the 5W-30 and instead run Mobil 1 15W-50 (not 15W-50 racing oil).

I regard today's full synthetic Mobil 1 0W-40 to be a reasonable substitute to the older 15W- 50 synthetic blend.

0w40 is usually used as a compromise street-track oil, which is fine. Make sure it plays nicely with your cats.

If you are not doing track days it's not remotely worth your time to use, but you still could if you really wanted. Anticipate a slight loss in mpg.

better lubrication and protection, the engine will tell you what it likes not the oil filler cap. my ram says 5-20, but it likes a blend of 0-40 and 5-30 redline. also, I like redline products in general. they make some good stuff.

Engine oils use a base with a certain viscosity. Then additives are put in to achieve different properties (multi-viscosity is one amongst others). In the case of viscosity there is a common test method that uses a capillary tube viscometer. https://www.machinerylubrication.com.../oil-viscosity

As the oil is used those additives "wear out" (not sure what that means exactly) and the oil gets contaminated. The viscosity then moves towards the base number. So a 5w-30 after 10k miles will usually be close to 25w at cold start test criteria. And likewise a 15w-50 will move towards its base too.

Personally... I use what the engine is SPEC is. If I feel I can hear engine clatter after the engine is fully warmed up (in a high mileage unit) I will start by using a high mileage version.
If that doesn't quiet it enough I'll start adding 20% of the same oil but at a higher cold number. For example 4qts of 5w-30 and 1 qt of 10w-30 I then increase percentage until I think it sounds good w/o any clatter.
On a few cars I've added a few oz of STP w/ZDDP. I really like the idea of ZDDP but the particulates can potentially effect catalytic converter performance. According to this guy its an urban myth though ->

Rotella T6 5W40. Great synthetic oil, and cheap. I run this in my 6.0 Powerstroke, LS1, and LS6 race car with no issues whatsoever. Tractor Supply has 5gal buckets for great prices!!

the op is asking about redline 0-40. How in the world did we get to rotella 5-40?

Apologies, I didn't realize the thread had a hall monitor that needed to clear posts. My POV was a full synthetic oil similar to the oil in question falls into the context of the OP request for feedback on a specific weight / manufacturer. I believe the open discussion is more helpful than :"stick to the manual" but what do I know.

I store my C-5 during the winter, but I like to start it up, 2-3 times, while it's sitting, to circulate the oil so nothing "dries up". I also like to get the A/C running, by using the defroster, for the same reason. Several years ago, with "cold starting" in mind, I put some 0W-40 Castrol oil in it, one fall day, just before parking it. After putting the oil in it, I started it up, to back it back into the garage, and the lifters were clattering like crazy. I though after a few seconds, the oil would get fully circulated through the engine, and it would quiet down......Didn't happen!

The next day, I drained the 0W-40 out of it, put 6 quarts of 5W-30 in it, and it's been fine ever since.

And when Mobil1 0w40 Dexos2 became factory fill for the C7, it was to replace needing to switch back and forth as above. It was also officially recommended for use in all years of the C7 (backward compatible)

I think the red line 0-40 will be fine, but don't know a lot about red line. I am going to use m1 0-40 for my next oil change, mainly for the higher Phourpus and zinc levels. I figure it will flow well when cold and be good when hot.
