Default strange belt problem

01' auto coupe. so today had to have it towed home, both drive belts off. They just came off, how the hell does that happen? I checked all pullys, they all seem good condition, turn freely, tensioners move freely. Now, I see something strange behind the crank pully there is a piece of rubber like material sticking out, it turns with the crank pully when the engine is jogged. I can't imagine what that might be and if it has something to do with the bely=ts coming off. I that pully also a balancer, could it have a rubber like material on the backside? Please any help would be appreciated. Looks like a big job to remove that pully

Harmonic balancer is shot and wobbling . Replace it. Not easy to replace but doable. Find a good mechanic. My replacement was $700.00 which included balancer, front seal, new bolt and labor.

Sounds like the harmonic balancer going bad. You will probably be able to dig up multiple posts on that issue.

Hi, I am also considering changing the harmonic balancer. I found a DORMAN on ebay for $ 87.80. Does anyone have experience with it?

Hi, Thanks for the tip. Just a little thought. Rock Autos GM Original Equipment Engine Harmonic Balancer Center Bore Diameter is 1.50 in. All Daycos HB Bore is 1,481 in. I guess it should work anyway.

I believe you! You've never come across this before because you've probably never owned a C5 before!! I love my car, but the C5 does have some unique faults, this being one of them......

Do you have any pics of the balancer or rubber that is hanging out? Mine is pretty old as well you can see cracks in the rubber. I noticed a belt noise that sounded like from the alternator pulley marble wobble but may be balancer like yours. I may remove the belt and see if it makes the noise id hate to end up like you stranded with the main drive belt off the car will overheat real quick. May i ask what you mean by engine jogged?

The harmonic balancer is not a good "thing" to save money on.....buy the best you can afford.
