Default Trunion Upgrade-VS- Roller Rockers

Hi all,

I habe been planning my top end build and reasearching like crazy on the many options. I am trying to decide if I should just upgrade the trunions on my factory rockers or go with Comp Cams Gold 1.72 rollers. Money is not the deciding factor. I also know a lot of people have thier favorite brand of rockers and I have decied on the Comps as I have always had great luck with their products.

So, upgrade or replace?

I had the same situation last year.. All my oem stuff was perfect, but im OCD and wanted to replace my springs and rockers for peace of mind.
I decided to go with a full roller rocker.. I did the Yella Terra brand. In my research it was the only one that cleared the valve covers..
Now having said that, I DID have to buy their thicker valve cover gasket to get the clearance.. But I think it's because I used the 1.8 Rockers..
All the other brands said that they would NOT clear factory valve covers..

You don’t have a cam or setup listed but the trunnion upgrade will work excellent for most builds

I would go with the stock rocker/trunion upgrade for sure, no need for a heavy roller

That being said, what is the trunion recommendation?

Straubs? Or Brian Tooley? I read nothing but good reviews for both. I haven't changed mine -- and probably won't unless I go with more cam than the Z06 I have sitting in a box -- but I have experience with other low rotation needle bearings. I've seen that needle bearings that make full rotations bear loads well, and don't show wear for a long period of time. Needles that only rotate partially, and then reciprocate in that short rotation tend to wear detents into the races. Stock valve covers would matter to me as well.

According to both Brian Tooley and Kurt Urban the max lift on a 15* head with stock rockers is .630. But don't take my word for it... straight from Mr. Tooley himself....

I installed Summit Racings trunnion kit along with my Texas Speed 224 R cam (.600 lift) about 4,000 miles ago , Engine had at least six HARD pulls on the Dyno & I've run it up to stock redline quite a few times , I have the Engine apart right now to install PRC heads , visual /physical inspection of rocker trunions shows no signs of wear , they still look new ! I also didn't hear any more "sewing machine noises" than before and this was with stock 130,000 mile lifters with a .600 lift cam . Summit offers a complete package to upgrade the entire valve train , would have bought that if I'd known at the time . Have fun !

Interested in your setup. I have something very similar. PRC stage 1, Torquer 2 and Fast 92. I've been thinking about upgrading to the 227's so I'll be watching for your results. When do you think it'll be done? Oh, and I have straub bushings in factory arms. No problems.

Stock rockers are super light and super strong. Do the trunions of your choice (i like the CHE’s) and forget about em.

I used the 1.7 rollers and they cleared the valve covers with the stock gaskets.

Watching that video, I would think that the full roller arm is the better way to go. However, given the cost of full rollers vs. the OE rocker upgrade, I initially went with the CompCams "upgrade", but then switched to the Straub Technologies bushings.

I hear yah.. the stock rockers are acutally really good. Kurt Urban uses them a lot of milder builds because they are so good. I too have stock rockers with a smith bros. bushing kit... but I also have a stock cam as this car is my daily driver. I may go with aftermarket shaft rockers but that would be for valvtrain stability …. and a 1:8 ratio.... the reason for this for me would be to keep the stock cam yet gain a little something with the ratio change.
