Help with “new” gm starter issue
I recently had a gm starter put in at the dealership. (Apparently all c5 gm starters are now remanufactured). Car starts fine now. However, there is a small “spinning”, kind of a slight “zinging” noise just after start up that lasts only for a second and goes away. It’s NOT any type of grinding noise.
The dealership agreed that it sounded weird but that everything was working properly. They ultimately warrantied and replaces the starter TWICE. All three in total have the exact same noise.
Has as anyone ever come across this issue? Or does anyone have a recommendation for me of what to do? Dealer actually said they would warranty it one more time. I guess I could try another brand starter but AC Delco seems to be the best aside from this issue. Thanks.

I had a dead spot and replaced starter years ago - no noise
My starter would not engage and I could start the car by going under the car and whacking the starter hard with a tire iron. I got a remanufactured GM starter from the distributor who sold GM and Delco parts to GM dealers. No noise. I suspect something like the bearings in the starters are bad. Eons ago when I worked on IBM equipment we got a bad batch of motors and had to go back and replace all of them that we installed a month or two after first replacing them. The warranty you now have will be forgotten or expired when the starter bites the dust.
If you paid a fortune for the dealer to install the starter at list price then you should get one that works and sounds like the original one on your car.

That zinging sound is actually the starter drive, sometimes referred to as the Bendix. That zinging sound is not normal, I replaced my starter about three years ago because of problems with the solenoid, and bought a Bosh starter with the two long mounting bolts and haven't had problems since.

The dealer explained that it’s somethinf that is still touching the flywheel after the car starts. But it’s just very unusual that the same noise is there with three different new gm starters. Is Bosch a good brand? At this point I think I’ll have try an aftermarket starter. That zinging noise is annoying. And like you said, you pay dealer prices, you want things to work like stock.
